This position is responsible to ensure all vehicles are safe for the road by providing skilled maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of gas and diesel-powered vehicles within the City’s fleet; and maintains a safe and clean shop environment.

This is a Rochester Hills GELC position. The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be required and assigned.
  1. Performs mechanical service and repairs on vehicles and equipment including small power equipment, mowers, cars, vans, light & heavy trucks, construction equipment, graders, loaders, backhoes, street sweepers and specialty vehicles. 
  2. Performs preventive maintenance, systems diagnosis, engine repair, brake repair, electrical repair, hydraulic systems repair, heating & cooling systems repair, suspension and steering repair.
  3. Services, diagnoses and repairs diesel engine emission control systems (diesel oxygenation catalyst (DOC), diesel particulate filters (DPFs), exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems.
  4. Diagnoses computerized engine, body control, and transmission systems.
  5. Diagnoses and repairs CANbus and multiplex systems. 
  6. Performs road tests of vehicles to verify completeness of repairs.
  7. Operates brake and machine lathes and other mechanical tools and equipment. 
  8. Welds and cuts for maintenance, repair and manufacture of equipment.
  9. Utilizes computerized diagnostic equipment and associated technical software, such as JPRO, Snap on MODIS, Cummins INSITE, and Allison DOC.  
  10. Responds to road service vehicle and equipment breakdowns.
  11. Reads, interprets and utilizes flow charts, schematic diagrams and equipment manuals in both hard copy and electronic/internet format.
  12. Orders parts for maintenance and repair.
  13. Maintains cleanliness of shop and working order of shop equipment.
  14. Assists other mechanics as assigned.
  15. Reports to work for on-call after hours needs, as assigned.
  16. Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Three (3) years previous mechanic work experience.
  • Master truck or auto certificate. 
  • Master ASE certification or the ability to obtain within one (1) year in position.
  • CDL license with A and N endorsements and no restrictions from operating a vehicle with air brakes within one (1) year in position.
  • Basic proficiency with office computers and intermediate proficiency with electronic diagnostic equipment and related software.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associates Degree in Automotive Service Technology.
  • ASE Certification(s).
  • EVT Certification(s).

  • This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 75 pounds of force; requires strenuous manual labor including, but not limited to digging, shoveling, sweeping, raking, hauling, crawling, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, twisting, and climbing.
  • Work performed may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting for long periods with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.
  • Work has standard vision requirements.
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Duties are performed daily both indoors and outdoors under all weather conditions and include exposure to inclement weather, noise, heavy traffic conditions, and chemical and exhaust fumes.

Note Regarding Starting Wage:  Each position at the City of Rochester Hills has an assigned Pay Grade consisting of 6 steps.  New employees generally start at Step 1 to allow for growth and wage progression, aligned with the City’s annual review process. The City will evaluate the applicant’s skills and experience to determine whether a higher Step placement is appropriate.
