Nature of Work
This is a temporary/seasonal/limited appointment position that is responsible for overseeing and being the in-charge lifeguard on duty that monitors pool activities to ensure the safety of swimmers by enforcing pool rules and regulations; by assigning lifeguards to their assignments for the day, including when to take breaks; and taking the lead on emergency situations. This position must be able to interact with the public in a professional, courteous, and helpful manner.
Work Schedule:
Aquatics Center: Positions are available late May through early September. Work schedules vary between 9:00 AM - 8:00 PM, Monday - Friday, and 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM Saturday and Sunday.
Pay Rate: $20.23 to $22.59 per hour, depending on qualifications/experience.

Duties And Responsibilities
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of: conflict resolution strategies; lifesaving methods and procedures, including first aid and standard resuscitation measures; rules and regulations governing conduct of the public at pools; pool equipment and maintenance; and swimming pool sanitation.
Skill in: swimming, and in the application of lifesaving techniques.
Ability to: communicate verbally, including projecting the voice across distances; hear noises and distress signals; recognize hazardous situations and implement effective courses of action; react quickly and calmly in emergencies; and perform rescue actions including administering first aid and CPR.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CRITERIA
In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, the following represents the physical and environmental demands for this position. The employee must be able to perform the essential functions with or without accommodation.
In consideration of the overall amount of physical effort required to perform this position, the work is best described as Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. However, all lifeguards must possess the ability to perform swimming rescues on drowning victims including approaching, breaking holds, and carrying people, which may require the removal of an adult victim from the water.
Physical demands that may be required continuously (2/3 or more of the time), frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of the time), and occasionally (up to 1/3 of the time) are noted below:
Continuous demands: standing, sitting, walking Frequent demands: lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, reaching, handling Occasional demands: kneeling, crouching, bending, twisting
Sensory requirements necessary in the performance of the essential functions of this position include: sight, hearing, touch, and smell.

Extreme heat (above 100 degrees)
Noise (need to shout in order to be heard)

Duties And Responsibilities
- Manage staff schedules and assignments to ensure coverage during open pool hours.
- Follow prescribed record keeping procedures, including incidents.
- Take the lead on emergencies that may arise.
- Monitor activities and swimmers at the pool to prevent accidents.
- Rescue swimmers in danger of drowning.
- Administer First Aid as necessary.
- Caution swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards; enforce and adhere to pool rules and regulations.
- Follow emergency action plan and procedures established in the event of an emergency.
- Maintain order in the pool and adjoining areas.
- Responsible for the availability and safekeeping of emergency equipment (rescue tubes, backboard, signs and other equipment).
- Answer complaints from the public and help navigate other challenging situations that may arise using conflict resolution strategies.
- Perform other duties as assigned or necessary.
- One (1) year of experience working as a lifeguard.
- Possess a valid American Red Cross Lifeguard certification including First Aid and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) by May 15, 2025.
- Pass swimming and life saving proficiency test administered by Lifeguard Manager.
- Experience overseeing or leading staff
