Nature of Work
Under supervision, the Planning Technician performs technical work in the field of current planning and serves as a primary point of contact for initial planning and permitting inquiries. The position is responsible for processing basic land use applications and assisting the general public, developers and contractors at the public counter and on the phone with planning related questions. Typical duties include, reviewing applications for completeness and compliance with existing ordinances; land use research; and approving and issuing over-the-counter permits. The position will have a high-level of interaction with external customers.
Pay Rate: 2024 starting rate of pay is $28.27 per hour with advancement to $37.56 per hour.

Education and Experience
A Bachelor's degree in municipal and regional planning, urban planning, landscape architecture, or a related field from an accredited college or university OR be graduating from one of the above programs by June of 2025.
Licenses and/or Certifications
Possession of a valid driver's license

- Provide information and technical assistance to the general public, developers and contractors regarding the planning process, including land use and zoning regulations
- Respond to inquiries and assist the general public with planning and zoning questions. Refer customers to appropriate resources as needed.
- Read, research, interpret, and communicate information related to the land development manual.
- Ensure increased understanding and support for departmental programs, services, and policies within the City and organization
- Review applications for completeness and compliance with planning ordinances and established planning practices.
- Approve basic land development applications.
- Prepare graphics, maps and supporting materials for applications.
- Assist the general public, developers and contractors in completing applications.
- Review building permit applications for zoning ordinance compliance.
- Create and issue zoning compliance letters.
- Collect data, prepare reports and maps and assist staff with projects on land use and zoning topics.
- Gather, prepare and track information related to application statuses and completion timelines.
- Assist in the preparation of staff reports. Conduct research on land use and planning topics as requested.
