This is a high level management and professional engineering position involving responsibility for managing large scale municipal projects and initiatives in parallel with coordinating, planning, and directing select divisions within of the City’s Bureau of Architecture and Engineering. The Assistant City Engineer works with the City Engineer to manage and direct multi-disciplined professional/technical employees within the Bureau and to make decisions and recommendations that are recognized as authoritative and have an important and lasting impact on the community, public realm and various engineering and architectural activities. The work is performed under the general direction of the City Engineer. Performs related work as required. City living is preferred, but not required for this position. This is a Competitive Class position. The individual selected to fill this vacancy will be given a provisional appointment and will be required to participate in the next Civil Service Examination for this title. A qualified applicant may be provisionally appointed and serve in the position until a Civil Service Examination is administered and an appropriate eligible list can be established to make a permanent appointment in accordance with the Civil Service Rule of Three. Conducts and participates in planning, interpreting, developing and reviewingprocedures, projects,programs, and policies;Conducts systematic reviews of theefficiencyandeconomyof operations of select divisions within the Bureauand works collaboratively with division teams to make recommendations to the City Engineer for improvement;Confers with thegeneralpublic andconcerned departments and agencies regardingengineeringoperationsand policies;Reviews and evaluates plans, designs,workingdrawings, estimates, contracts, records, reports and relatedengineeringand/or architectural data and makes recommendations;Assists the City Engineer in the preparationof theannual operatingand capital budget andcontrollingof expenditureswithinbudgetallowances;Develops long-range planning and engineering proposals;Analyzes the capabilities and performances of Bureau personnel.
