What are the responsibilities and job description for the Library Technology Services Specialist- Open Competitive Exam position at City of Rochester (NY)?
This is a support staff position in the Technology Center of the Rochester Public Library. This position is responsible for assisting in many areas of the Technology Center including providing technical support with computer navigation and basic computer operations. Employees of this class work according to standard procedures and the needs of the department. The incumbent works under general supervision and performs routine tasks on an independent basis. Performs related work as required.
Greets patrons and assists as needed in person or on the phone;
Assists patrons in use of web-based services including but not limited to e-mail, job search and application, benefit information, use of social media;
Assists patrons in use of computers, laptops, and mobile devices;
Provides support to patrons on how to navigate and use websites;
Assists patrons with resume building;
Runs programs on computer games for patrons, partnering with member libraries;
Assesses skills and needs of patrons to determine workflow and where staff assistance is required;
Assists patrons in use of library technology, including use of equipment for scanning, printing, copying, and faxing services;
Performs related work as required.
2. Associate’s degree* AND Four (4) years of full-time experience or its part-time equivalent in direct customer service, one (1) year of which involved assisting patrons in a technology setting. OR
3. High School diploma* or Equivalency* AND Six (6) years of full-time experience or its part-time equivalent in direct customer service, two (2) years of which involved assisting patrons in a technology setting.
*Candidates who expect to receive this degree or diploma by August 1, 2025, may participate in the examination. If successful on the examination, you will not be certified for appointment until you have submitted proof of completion of the requirements to the City of Rochester Examination Administration Unit. Proof must be submitted no later than 2 (two) months after the completion of your degree or diploma; failure to do so will result in the removal of your name from this list.

Fundamentals of Working in a Library:
These questions are designed to evaluate the candidate's knowledge about the common terms and concepts used in various sections of a library (e.g. Circulation, Reference, Technical Processing, etc.); the procedures associated with shelving, storing, checking out and receiving library materials; and the proper methods of using equipment commonly found in a library and of handling, processing and storing library materials.
Name and Number Checking:
These questions test for the ability to distinguish between sets of words, letters, and/or numbers that are almost exactly alike. Material is usually presented in two or three columns, and you will have to determine how the entry in the first column compares with the entry in the second column and possibly the third. You will be instructed to mark your answers according to a designated code provided in the directions.
Customer Service:
These questions test for knowledge of techniques used to interact with other people, to gather and present information, and to provide assistance, advice, and effective customer service in a courteous and professional manner. Questions will cover such topics as understanding and responding to people with diverse needs, perspectives, personalities, and levels of familiarity with agency operations, as well as acting in a way that both serves the public and reflects well on your agency.
