What are the responsibilities and job description for the Licensed Veterinary Technician position at City of Rochester (NY)?
This is a skilled technical position in the City of Rochester Animal Services. The employee in this position performs tasks to assist and support veterinarians with a variety of animal health activities such as: medical examinations, surgical procedures, and treatments. Direct supervision is received from a licensed veterinarian or shelter management. Related duties are performed as required.
This is a Competitive Class position. The individual selected to fill this vacancy will be given a provisional appointment and will be required to participate in the next Civil Service Examination for this title.
A qualified applicant may be provisionally appointed and serve in the position until a Civil Service Examination is administered and an appropriate eligible list can be established to make a permanent appointment in accordance with the Civil Service Rule of Three. CITY RESIDENCY IS PREFERRED
- Examines animals to assist in diagnosing injuries or illness;
- Administers medications, vaccinations, and anesthesia drugs;
- Maintains drug logs;
- Prepares animals for surgery;
- Cleans, disinfects, and organizes surgical suite and clinic;
- Assists with surgical sterilization and other veterinary procedures as directed by a licensed veterinarian;
- Maintains inventory of veterinary supplies;
- Advises and educates animal owners on future care and treatment;
- Prepares instruments, equipment, and materials for surgery;
- May train or instruct volunteers and staff in basic preparation for surgery or cleaning and sterilizing of surgical instruments;
- Performs other veterinary and animal care responsibilities as directed by a licensed veterinarian or shelter management;
- Operates a vehicle to transport animals and pick up shelter supplies.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent; PLUS
- Two (2) years experience working as a Licensed Veterinary Technician at an animal hospital, animal shelter, or related organization. Work experience must include administering anesthesia and performing surgical procedures.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (All licenses and certificates must be maintained throughout employment with this job)
- Possession of a valid Veterinary Technology License issued by the NYS Education Department's Division of Professional Licensing Services.
- Possession of a valid New York State Class D driver’s license at time of appointment.
Salary : $46,320 - $59,495
