What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Fire Communications Technician position at City of Rochester (NY)?
This is an office and field position involving responsibility for overall system design and performance along with the installation and proper maintenance of the Fire Communication System of the Rochester Fire Department. The incumbent works under the direct supervision of the Planning & Research Division with considerable leeway for planning how the work will be done. Work is performed in all types of weather conditions, including the most severe. This position differs from the Fire Communications Technician classification in that it requires a higher degree of technical aptitude. The employee is required to respond to emergency conditions during unscheduled hours. Related work is performed as required.
This is a Competitive Class position. The individual selected to fill this vacancy will be given a provisional appointment and will be required to participate in the next Civil Service Examination for this title.

CITY RESIDENCY WILL BE REQUIRED WITHIN ONE YEAR OF HIRE.
- Provides recommendations for communications systems design;
- Tests and makes recommendations for equipment purchases;
- Programs and sets up radio channels for portable and mobile radios;
- Installs radios in Fire vehicles and all Fire Department stations;
- Maintains and repairs fire alarm boxes in schools, hospitals, etc., for the Fire Municipal Box System;
- Repairs and maintains house, portable, and mobile radios;
- Performs necessary maintenance and repair work in the field;
- Repairs the receiving console at various locations;
- Inputs data into the Fire Communications System;
- Operates all equipment such as drills, conduit benders, drill presses, cable pullers, electrical test equipment, meters, hand tools, and hand drills;
- Maintains inventory of supplies, records, and logs both manually and by computer;
- Attends meetings with municipal partners to enhance system performance and programming;
- Completes daily paperwork for repaired equipment and provides purchase recommendations for needed equipment.
- Associate's degree PLUSthree (3) years of experience in any of the two (2) following:
- In the repair of electrical and electronic devices to include: fire alarm systems, mobile and portable radios, and related equipment;
- Vehicle-based installation of mobile radios, including wiring, antenna positioning, and installation;
- In the installation, repair, and maintenance of station amplifiers, digitized vocal systems, radio vocal systems and speakers, and all wiring of such devices;
- Programming and maintenance of 2-way Trunk and VHF radios. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the use of Motorola Customer Programming Software.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of a valid New York State Class D Driver's License. This license must be maintained throughout employment with the City.
- Must be available and willing to be on-call 24/7, as needed.
