What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Recreation Specialist position at City of Rochester (NY)?
This is a recreation position responsible for supervising various recreation, youth development and life skills programs. The Senior Recreation Specialist acts as assistant to the facility director, and will assume oversight of a facility in the director’s absence. Has ongoing responsibility for various assigned aspects of site management. The Senior Recreation Specialist exercises direct supervision over Recreation Specialists, part-time, seasonal, and/or volunteer staff and providers of contracted services. Related work is performed as required or directed.
This is a Competitive Class position. The individual selected to fill this vacancy will be given a provisional appointment and will be required to participate in the next Civil Service Examination for this title.
A qualified applicant may be provisionally appointed and serve in the position until a Civil Service Examination is administered and an appropriate eligible list can be established to make a permanent appointment in accordance with the Civil Service Rule of Three. I. Bachelor’s degree in Recreation/Leisure Services, Physical Education, Human Services, Art, Drama, Dance, or Music;
OR
II. Associate’s degree in Recreation/Leisure Services, Physical Education, Human Services, Art, Drama, Dance, or Music; PLUS two (2) years of full-time experience (or part-time equivalent) conducting or instructing recreation, educational, or leisure programs (such as sports, physical education, music, arts and crafts, dance, or dramatics);
OR
III. Four (4) years of full-time experience (or part-time equivalent) as described in Section II above.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Possession of American Red Cross standard first aid and CPR certification or equivalent at the time of appointment and continuously throughout their incumbency.
2. New York State Class D Driver's License at the time of appointment. This licensure must be maintained throughout employment in this job.
3. Possession and maintenance of a Van Certification issued by the Department of Recreation & Human Services.

CITY RESIDENCY WILL BE REQUIRED WITHIN ONE YEAR OF HIRE.
- Supervises Recreation staff and suppliers of contracted services;
- Administers emergency first aid when necessary;
- Ensure compliance with related City and departmental policies and procedures, such as those related to child abuse and cash handling;
- Instructs and leads a wide variety of youth development, life skills, recreation, athletic, cultural and social activities, in accordance with the facility schedule;
- Coordinates assigned areas of facility management, such as facility use permit program or custodial inspections, on an ongoing basis;
- Acts as a role model to participants and staff;
- Ensures that facilities are safe and well maintained and are in compliance with all city and bureau safety policies;
- Ensures that participant code of conduct is understood and adhered to by all persons in the facility;
- Acts as the facility director in the director’s absence;
- Participates in recreation staff meetings, presents information, suggests program changes and additions;
- Assists the facility director in planning seasonal and weekly programs and activities along with input from participants and community members;
- Responds to a variety of inquires related to facility programs;
- Maintains records, completes forms, follows procedures, compiles and summarizes available information and statistics and writes basic reports;
- Maintains a variety of records, such as program attendance and facility maintenance;
- Represents facility and director at various community meetings;
- Collects activity fees, follows authorized procedures for cash handling;
- May be assigned to manage a satellite operation;
- Recruits youth and adult recreation participants through a variety of means including neighborhood outreach and collaborations with other agencies;
- Attends training sessions to remain current in youth development methods and research, first aid, and other necessary skills.
