Description

Under general supervision; performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties requiring the operation and servicing of vehicles and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of municipal systems, and related public facilities; may supervise small work crews.

Examples of Duties

Performs functions of a Maintenance Worker I.

Operates trucks and trucks with attachments; e.g. snow plows and spreaders; street sweeper; mud jack, brush chipper, paint machines, mowing equipment and other vehicular equipment to include backhoes, excavator and any other heavy or specialized equipment.

Drives and loads an open type refuse collection truck, acts as lead worker of a collection crew.

Perform daily safety and maintenance checks on assigned vehicles; keeps records of miles driven, fuel used, materials used and duties accomplished.

Operates various heavy equipment in the leveling and excavating of land surfaces; drives front-end loaders to load materials on truck.

Performs light maintenance tasks on equipment such as minor adjustments, repairs and routine maintenance; maintains proper fluid levels; checks tires.

Acts as lead worker of small work crews; may perform semi-skilled manual tasks in the removal of debris from municipal thoroughfares and levee maintenance. May also act as a lead worker in the absence of a supervisor or crew leader.

May supervise a work crew engaged in the repair of the water distribution and sewer and storm collection systems.

Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of the job.

Typical Qualifications

Valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL-B) with air brakes endorsement or equivalent upon application or ability to obtain within sixty (60) days from hire date.

Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school or GED.

Requires two (2) years experience in the operation of construction equipment.

Requires working knowledge of public works construction and maintenance methods, equipment and materials.

Requires knowledge of truck, equipment and workplace safety requirements and procedures.

Knowledge of operation of front end loaders, dozers, graders, compactors, snow blowers and other pieces of heavy equipment.

Requires ability to use hand and power tools and perform semi-skilled manual work.

Requires ability to operate and use construction and highway maintenance equipment.

Requires skill in the interpretation of work orders and the application of equipment to work problems.

Requires ability to perform minor mechanical repair work on construction equipment.

Requires ability to perform maintenance work in a variety of weather conditions.

Requires knowledge of safety practices and traffic diversion procedures.

Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form.

Ability to operate a computer, tablet, and related electronic devices with appropriate training.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees, contractors, vendors, and the general public.

Ability to work various shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as assigned. Must also be available to respond to emergency situations 24 hours a day if necessary.

Ability to work independently with limited supervision.

Requires knowledge of the geographical area in the City of Rock Island.

Assists in the general maintenance and housekeeping of City owned property and buildings.

Requires ability to operate vehicles skillfully and safely; observes safe driving practices.

Requires ability to perform work in a variety of weather conditions.

Comply with established safety standards and rules including the use of safety equipment, personal protective equipment and other devices and procedures necessary for protection.

Supplemental Information

Selected candidates must meet a residency requirement, which includes living in the state of Illinois or Iowa and must report within 60 minutes after being called into work for an overtime assignment.

While performing the duties of this job, employee is regularly required to talk or hear; frequently required to walk, stand, sit, stoop, kneel and crouch, to use hands and fingers to handle, feel and make fine adjustments, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance. The employee will frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds which may require employee assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to work under varied weather conditions.


Environmental Conditions: The work is performed inside and/or outside and includes being exposed to extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, mechanical hazards, electrical hazards, chemical hazards, atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system or skin and oils, may work in confined spaces, darkness or poor lighting conditions, trenches, and/or isolation.
