Description
Under general supervision performs duties relating to the collection and disposal of residential refuse requiring the operation of collection vehicles, physical placement of solid waste material in vehicle, disposal of material at designated location, and various street maintenance activities.
Examples of Duties
Will pick up individual garbage and refuse containers and load refuse into the collection vehicle.
Operates and drives refuse collection vehicles in residential areas.
Will follow predetermined routes on a set schedule collecting acceptable wastes and attaching violation notice tags that are non-compliant.
Transports refuse materials to and from specified destinations, including landfills and transfer stations.
Performs light maintenance tasks on equipment such as minor adjustments, repairs and routine maintenance; maintains proper fluid levels; checks tires.
Completes and submits records on check-in time, number and tonnage of loads, monitor amount of fuel used, record odometer readings and provides notice regarding observed equipment problems.
When not assigned to an automated or manual refuse collection route, performs other duties including but not limited to, special refuse pickups, roll off container operations, leaf collection, e-waste disposal, lot cleanups, weed mowing, recycling, city facility refuse collection, and street and levee maintenance.
May answer citizens' questions regarding proper contents, packing weight, pick-up times, placement of refuse containers, leaf and yard waste and recycling collection.
Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of the job.
Typical Qualifications
Valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL-B) with air brakes endorsement or equivalent.
Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school or GED.
Requires ability to operate refuse collection vehicles.
Ability to operate all equipment for loading and unloading refuse, including but not limited to, front end loaders, skid steers and single or tandem axle trucks.
Knowledge of methods and techniques of solid waste and yard waste collection and disposal and recycling collection and separation.
Requires ability to perform minor equipment servicing work.
Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form.
Ability to operate a computer, tablet, and related electronic devices with appropriate training.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees, contractors, vendors, and the general public.
Ability to work various shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as assigned. Must also be available to respond to emergency situations 24 hours a day if necessary.
Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
Requires knowledge of the geographical area in the City of Rock Island.
Assists in the general maintenance and housekeeping of City owned property and buildings.
Requires ability to operate vehicles skillfully and safely; observes safe driving practices.
Requires ability to perform work in a variety of weather conditions.
Comply with established safety standards and rules including the use of safety equipment, personal protective equipment and other devices and procedures necessary for protection.
Supplemental Information
Selected candidates must meet a residency requirement, which includes living in the state of Illinois and must report within 60 minutes after being called into work for an overtime assignment.
