Description
Under general supervision, performs a variety of duties in association with City water service; answers customer questions and complaints regarding water billings; installs or removes meters; makes minor repairs; takes meter readings; monitors commercial users consumption; collects delinquent water billing payments.
Examples of Duties
Receives and reviews customer complaints regarding water bills, determines if billing is correct; assists in correcting unusually high water consumption.
Installs or replaces water meters makes minor repairs and adjustments; takes readings.
Monitors water consumption of large commercial users; notes significant increases and decreases in commercial water use.
In conjunction with the Collection Officer, collects delinquent water billing payments; shuts off water service to delinquent user.
May train and supervise meter readers and other service representatives.
Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of the job.
Typical Qualifications
Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years high school or GED.
Requires two (2) years experience as a meter reader or meter repairer.
Requires working knowledge of the methods, materials and techniques in the repair of water meters.
Requires working knowledge of water billing procedures.
Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form.
Ability to operate a computer, tablet, and related electronic devices with appropriate training.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees, contractors, vendors, and the general public.
Ability to work various shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as assigned. Must also be available to respond to emergency situations 24 hours a day if necessary.
Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
Requires knowledge of the geographical area in the City of Rock Island.
Assists in the general maintenance and housekeeping of City owned property and buildings.
Requires ability to operate vehicles skillfully and safely; observes safe driving practices.
Requires ability perform work in a variety of weather conditions.
Comply with established safety standards and rules including the use of safety equipment, personal protective equipment and other devices and procedures necessary for protection.
Requires possession of a valid Class "D" Illinois Vehicle Operator's License or an equivalent license issued by the employee's state of residence.
Supplemental Information
Selected candidates must meet a residency requirement, which includes living in the state of Illinois and must report within 60 minutes after being called into work for an overtime assignment.
