What are the responsibilities and job description for the BUILDING INSPECTIONS - PERMIT TECHNICIAN position at City of Rockwall?
Under general supervision of the Building Official, performs routine permitting functions for the City's Building Inspections Department. Position processes Certificates of Occupancy, residential and commercial permits, and provides overall customer service to building professionals and the general public. Employees in this class perform specific functions requiring specialized knowledge of departmental rules and regulations, and apply acute attention to detail.
- Performs routine to moderately complex administrative and clerical support duties for the Building Official and Building Inspections Department.
- Processes and issues permits, calculates and collects appropriate fees.
- Routes incoming telephone calls, voicemail messages and visitors to appropriate staff person and responds to inquiries both orally and in writing in a professional and timely manner.
- Prepares and issues Certificates of Occupancies, coordinating efforts with all of the City's development departments.
- Issues contractor registrations, and enters all registrations issued into the computer.
- Coordinates with builders, homeowners, and business owners to schedule building inspector appointments and inspections
- Assists in compiling and organizing information and materials needed for preparation of B.O.A. packets, prepares and posts agendas and attends meetings for the purpose of taking minutes.
- Provides administrative and clerical support for Neighborhood Improvement Services Coordinator
- Required to report for work punctually, work all scheduled hours, and any required overtime as deemed necessary. Must maintain a physical condition and standards necessary for the proper performance of duties, with or without accommodation.
- Opens, processes, and distributes department mail.
- Performs related work as directed.
Training and Experience
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by 2 to 3 years progressively responsible administrative related work experience as a Permit Technician. Broad knowledge of modern office support functions and computer applications. Must possess an ICC Permit Tech Certification or the ability to obtain within 12 months of employment.

- Considerable knowledge of modern office procedures.

- General knowledge of modern computer applications, i.e., database software, word processing, spreadsheets.
- Skill in oral communications for effective expression and clarity.
- Skill in keyboard functions, filing and record maintenance.
- Skill in using an architectural and engineering scale to review plans.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, support staff, and other department position interact with.
- Ability to organize and review work for efficient results and accuracy.
- Ability to process multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining an attention to detail for the purpose of ensuring accuracy in task performance.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide; calculate decimals and percentages.
- Ability to understand read and interpret site plans, surveys, building plans, applications and related forms of written materials containing legal language such as property descriptions, etc.
Physical requirements
- Tasks are essentially sedentary, with occasional walking, bending, light lifting, or other restricted physical activities.
- Tasks involve some physical effort, i.e., some standing and walking, or frequent light lifting (5-10 pounds); or minimal dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs, or body in the operation of shop or office equipment; may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
