Under general supervision of the Finance Department, reports to the Utility Billing Supervisor. Employees in this class perform meter reading and assist in proper installation, repair and replacement of water meter devices and the repair of leaks. Position also performs related meter services tasks and assists in completing daily work orders.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Reads water meters on assigned route(s); walks long distances (approximately 7 to 10 miles/day) to meter locations in various weather conditions; locates and uncovers meters as necessary. Restructures routes to read meters in sequence. Reads meters by recording consumption and inputting readings into hand-held computers, while maintaining departmental efficiency standards. Performs re-reading meters to check the accuracy of earlier readings.Inspects meters and connections for any defects, irregularities, malfunctions, tampering, and/or unauthorized connections; reports meter defects, hazards, or related findings to utility billing staff. Assists and/or completing daily work orders and or weekly non pay cut offs.Resolves and/or refers public inquiries and complaints.Delivers City mail to the postal service.Maintains assigned tools, equipment, and vehicle in proper working and safe operating condition.Required to report for work punctually, work all scheduled hours, and any required overtime as deemed necessary. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Working knowledge of the practices and materials utilized in the installation and maintenance of water metering devices for municipal utility systems. Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work. Considerable knowledge of the geography of the city. Skill in the use of assigned tools and equipment. Ability to locate leaks and malfunctions in water meters, services lines, and related devices. Ability to lift heavy objects and works in adverse environmental conditions. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. Ability to work effectively with other employees and the general public.Physical Requirements: Tasks involve walking up to 7-10 miles per day, standing; some lifting and carrying of moderate weight (12-20 pounds); and/or the operation of vehicles, office, shop, or hand tools in which manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination are important ingredients of safe and/or productive operations. Tasks involve the regular, and at times sustained, performance of heavier physical tasks such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, working in confined spaces, and lifting or carrying moderately heavy (20-50 pounds) items and occasionally very heavy (100 pounds or over) items.Environmental Requirements: Tasks will require exposure to heat/cold or extreme weather conditions, exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g. dirt, cold, rain, fumes), and exposure to dust or pollen.Sensory Requirements: Tasks may require sound perception and discrimination, visual perception and discrimination and oral communication ability.HIPAA Compliance Statement All employees who have access to health information whose confidentiality is protected by the HIPAA Privacy Rule must have an understanding and knowledge of the Privacy Rule that corresponds to their job responsibilities.
