JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for supervising and participating in the work of a water and sewer system maintenance crew.
- Operation of heavy equipment to include: back-hoe, tracked excavators, wheeled loader, and dozer.
- Supervises the work of an assigned crew of personnel.
- Installs and performs maintenance on water and sewer utility services.
- Installs and performs repairs on fire hydrants.
- Ensures the availability of equipment and materials.
- Trains, supervises, evaluates and handles disciplinary actions of subordinate personnel.
- Responds to after-hours emergency situations.
- Assists in smoke-testing sewer lines.
- Maintains assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by supervision.
- Successful applicants must possess a high school diploma or GED from an institution accredited by the state of North Carolina.
- Minimum of three years experience in water and sewer utilities construction and repair, with heavy concentration on equipment operation.
- Sufficient experience to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions with the ability to answer questions and resolve problems usually associated with three to five years of experience.
- Possession of a valid NC Class B- CDL with the ability to obtain a Class A- CDL within a six month training period. Must have an active and consecutive 3-year verifiable driving history. *Driving history will be checked.
- Knowledge of water and sewer utility construction repair and maintenance.
- Knowledge of city policies and procedures.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The General Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include City policies and procedures and safety guidelines and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related supervisory and technical duties. Heavy traffic and inclement weather contribute to the complexity of the work.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to supervise a crew of personnel in the repair and maintenance of water and sewer utilities. Success in this position contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of system operations.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with other City personnel, inspectors, contractors, and members of the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while typically standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, contagious diseases, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold or inclement weather.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: This position has direct supervision over a crew of assigned personnel.
