DEFINITION: This position performs unskilled and semiskilled work in the maintenance and care of the City's cemeteries.
REPORTS TO: The Crew and Cemetery Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions.
HOURS OF OPERATION: 7:30 A.M - 4:30 P.M. M-F (PLUS WEEKEND STANDBY, ROTATION SCHEDULE).
- Assist in cleaning of cemetery buildings removing litter and debris and various landscaping activities to keep facilities looking neat and attractive.
- Perform routine cleaning and maintenance on equipment to minimize downtime and extend the life of the equipment.
- Promptly respond when called on weekends to assist in opening and closing of graves according to funeral schedules.
- Mows grass, edges curbs, and removes leaves; removes tree limbs and dead trees from cemeteries
- Operates mowers, blowers, edgers, and weed-eaters.
- Assists with cleaning buildings, grounds and vehicles.
- Assists with pruning shrubs and cutting undergrowth.
- Assists with shoveling dirt.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Assist with routine pickup and delivery of supplies.
- Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Experience with outdoor maintenance work preferred
- Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Ability to operate a farm-style tractor and dump trailer is preferred.
Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of referenced tools and equipment.
Knowledge of safety standards.
Skill in analyzing problems and identifying solutions.
Skill in the repair and maintenance of hand tools
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Crew and Cemetery Supervisor assign work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include the Personnel Policy Manual; OSHA regulations; work zone safety standards; and equipment operation and repair manuals. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related maintenance duties. Inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the work.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to assist in the maintenance of City cemeteries. Success in this position contributes to a well-maintained City cemeteries, parks and facilities.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers and members of the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, stooping, standing, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, safety shoes, or gloves.
