GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
Responsible for examining submitted building plans for compliance of adopted codes and city ordinances in all aspects of the building process. This position requires working with the public, contractors and others involved in the construction business.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Review plans submitted for all types of construction, alterations, and additions of residential and commercial building(s) for conformance with adopted building, fire, and pertinent safety codes. This duty is performed about 70% of the time.
- Efficiently provide comments on non-conforming items, and omissions from, submitted plans. Enforcing state codes and structural safety regulations and requirements. This duty is performed about 10% of the time.
- Work with engineers, architects, contractors, and other professions throughout the plans review process, and throughout all phases of construction projects to ensure compliance of the minimum requirements of current adopted building and other codes. This duty is performed about 10% of the time.
- Communicate concerns identified during plans examination to ensure comprehensive communication with building inspector(s). This duty is performed about 5% of the time.
- Inspect existing commercial structures for fire code deficiencies. This duty is performed about 5% of the time.
- Follow department policies and procedures. This duty is performed about 100% of the time.
- Perform any other duties as required or assigned. This duty is performed about 5% of the time.
- Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Knowledge of a specialized field (however acquired), such as basic accounting, computer, etc. Equivalent of four years in high school, plus night, trade extension, or correspondence school
specialized training, equal to two years of college, plus 4 years related experience and/or training, and 19 to 23 months related management experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Ability to read a limited number of words and recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers; ability to write and speak simple sentences as a means for basic communication. ability to read and understand simple instructions, short correspondence, notes, letters and memos; ability to write simple correspondence. ability to read and understand documents such as policy manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to write routine reports and correspondence. ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions in person-to-person and small group situations with customers, clients, general public and other employees of the organization. ability to read, analyze, and understand general business/company related articles and professional journals; ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees. ability to write reports, business correspondence, and policy/procedure manuals; ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane, algebra, solid geometry and trigonometry.

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of known variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram formats.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must have and maintain a valid drivers license.
Obtain the following certification from the International Code Council(ICC) with twelve months of employment; Fire Inspector I

Degree in Building Inspection Technology, Construction Management, Architecture, or Engineering. Building Inspection Technology Certificate
Commercial Plans Examiner, Residential Plans Examiner, Mechanical Plans Examiner, Plumbing Plans Examiner, Fire Alarm and Fire Sprinkler Plans Examiner.
