Performs work monitoring, maintaining, and repairing city facilities and grounds, conducting preventive maintenance, operating light to heavy machinery and equipment, cleaning and sanitizing floors, bathrooms, and walls, and related work as apparent or assigned.


Work is performed under the supervision of the Recreation Facilities Manager.

Essential Functions

  • Assists with ice making and maintenance procedures; operates ice re-surfacers and ice edgers; conducts routine maintenance on ice re-surfacer. 
  • Monitors and maintains ice arena and building mechanical systems; investigates mechanical problems and performs minor repairs; monitors HVAC and other building equipment; greases pumps and changes belts; assists with the coordination of contractor maintenance and repair services.
  • Provides interior maintenance of assigned areas including the maintenance of floors, walls, tables, chairs and emptying waste baskets; performs minor repairs on door hardware.
  • Operates and maintains assigned equipment.  
  • Assists with the upkeep of facility grounds; collects and disposes debris; conducts weeding and mulching. 
  • Conducts snow removal seasonally; utilizes equipment and vehicles to remove snow from streets, sidewalks, parking lots, and trails; lays salt and ice removal chemicals as needed. 
  • Opens buildings and provides lockdown services in the evening; assists with vendor refunds and maintenance issues with vending machines.
  • Performs room and equipment set ups; arranges tables and chairs; sets up and operates audiovisual equipment; assists with programing and activity set up as needed. 
  • Monitors the facilities to maintain a clean and safe environment for all users; follows established safety practices as set by the City of Rosemount; monitors air quality of Arena in compliance with the Minnesota Department of Health; responds to alarm calls for the facilities; monitors service levels of fire extinguishers and defibrillators.
  • Develops and maintains a positive working relationship with coworkers; works in conjunction with supervisors, Building Attendants, and other Building Maintenance Workers to complete necessary tasks; shows new staff operation and maintenance procedures; assists in determining operational priorities; attends necessary meetings and training.
  • Collects ice rental fees, open skating fees and skate sharpening fees when needed; sharpens ice skates; monitors maintenance products and pro shop inventory and assists with ordering of various products and supplies.
  • Works with patrons of the arena, community center or Steeple Center; communicates effectively with them to see that their needs are met; trouble shoots concerns that may arise with customers using the facilities and notifies supervisor of issues.           
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED 
  • One to three years of experience in maintenance and repair work
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
Other Specifications
  • Certified Ice Technician certification preferred.
  • Valid driver's license 
Desirable Qualifications
  • Two or more years of experience in building maintenance.
  • One or more years of experience in community center/ice arena operations.
  • One or more years of experience operating ice re-surfacer.
  • US Ice Rink Association Certified Ice Technician.

Working Conditions
Physical Requirements and Activity 
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions and frequently tasting or smelling and lifting.
Sensory Requirements
Work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
Sensory Utilization
Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.
Environmental Conditions
Work regularly requires exposure to wet humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment, frequently requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to vibration and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and occasionally requires exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
