DEFINITION

To perform a wide variety of technical natural resource management and maintenance tasks in open space areas such as creeks, preserves, riparian and the urban forest including construction and maintenance.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Natural Resources Worker I - This is the entry level class in the Natural Resources Worker series. Positions in this class typically have little or no directly related work experience and work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks.   The Natural Resources Worker I class is distinguished from the Natural Resources Worker II by the performance of less than the full range of duties assigned to the Natural Resources Worker II.  Incumbents work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks, progressing to general supervision as procedures and processes of assigned area of responsibility are learned.

Natural Resources Worker II - This is the journey level class in the Natural Resources Worker series and is distinguished from the Natural Resource Worker I by the ability to perform the full range of duties assigned with only occasional instruction or assistance as unusual or unique situations arise.  Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from Natural Resource Worker I.  May provide technical and functional supervision of lower-level staff, seasonal staff and/or volunteers.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Natural Resources Worker I

Receives immediate supervision from an assigned supervisor; receives technical and functional supervision from a Natural Resource Specialist, Senior Natural Resources Worker or Natural Resources Worker II.

Natural Resources Worker II

Receives general supervision from an assigned supervisor; receives technical and functional supervision from a Natural Resources Specialist or Senior Natural Resources Worker.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES – Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform natural resource maintenance and management tasks, including vegetation management; identify, remove, and control of non-native, invasive plants, pest through an integrated pest management approach; identify habitat concerns, and participate in data collection projects as assigned; provide information to resource management staff as needed.

  • Operate and maintain a variety of mechanical and power tools and equipment such as chain saws, brush cutters, line trimmers, blowers, power augers, drills, mowing tractors, all-terrain vehicles, wood chippers, various hand tools required for vegetation and invasive species removal, construction, irrigation installation and repair, general construction and maintenance duties performed.

  • Perform preserve open space, creek, riparian areas and trail maintenance, restoration and construction duties, including trail inspections, clearing downed trees and beaver dams, erosion control; maintain and construct fences and gates.

  • Plant and prune shrubs and trees.

  • Remove unsheltered camps, including trash, debris, and hazardous material from assigned areas.

  • Assist in installing traffic control around work sites to ensure safe conditions for the general public and City staff.  

  • Set up and tear down materials and equipment for special events.

  • Respond to on-site to inquiries from the public regarding risks and concerns related to Natural Resource areas and facilities.

  • Provide needed information and training on how to perform certain work tasks to new and/or seasonal employees.

  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.

  • Utilize technology to perform asset management, email, and written documents.

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Natural Resources Worker I


Experience and Training

Experience:

No experience is required; experience in ecology, biology, restoration, forestry, and construction is highly desirable.

AND

Training:  

Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, GED, or higher level degree.

 

License or Certificate

Possession of a valid California driver’s license by date of appointment.

Possession of a valid California Class B drivers’ license is desirable.

Possession of a valid Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) is desirable.

 

Natural Resources Worker II

 

Experience and Training

Experience:

Two years of increasingly responsible experience performing natural resource maintenance and repair work similar to that of a Natural Resources Worker I with the City of Roseville; experience in ecology, biology, restoration, forestry, and construction is desirable.

AND

Training:

Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, GED, or higher level degree; additional course work or training in ecology, biology, restoration, and forestry is desirable.

 

License or Certificate:

Possession of a valid California driver’s license by date of appointment.

Possession of a valid California Class B driver's license within one year of date of appointment.

Possession of a valid Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) within one year of date of appointment.

  • Educational background from a foreign country may be evaluated by an accredited United States college or university listed on the U.S. Department of Education Database of Accredited Post-Secondary Institutions and Programs website.
  • Verification of degree equivalency may be obtained from organizations that provide foreign education credential evaluation services. The City of Roseville will accept verification from any of the listed member agencies found athttp://www.naces.orgo rwww.aice-eval.org.
  • A copy of the foreign credential evaluation verification can be attached to the employment application.
  • If you are offered a position with the City of Roseville, as a part of the pre-employment steps, applicants must provide a foreign degree credential equivalency certificate from an approved member agency above.  Applicants who do not provide verification, will be eliminated from further consideration.

SELECTION PROCESS:

All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications will have their application scored in a Formula Rate Examination. The applicant’s experience and education will be evaluated using a pre-determined formula. Scores from this evaluation will determine applicant ranking and placement on the Employment List. Supplemental questions will be utilized by the department hiring authority to make interview and selection determinations. 

Final appointment is contingent upon a check of past employment references, passing a City-paid fingerprint check, and depending on the position applied for, a pre-employment medical exam, drug and alcohol screening test, credit check, license and/or education verification, psychological examination, and/or an extensive Police Department background check process.  

Some positions require the clearance of a comprehensive Police Department (PD) background check within 12 months of appointment. The City may appoint candidates to positions prior to clearing the extensive Police Department background check, and in those circumstances the candidate will be advised in advance that security access in the information technology systems will be limited to non-PD related systems until PD clearance is received, and if the candidate ultimately does not clear the PD background it will result in release from City service without appeal rights, in accordance with Personnel Rules 3.04.050.
