SUMMARY: Under general supervision, monitors activities in city swimming areas; prevents accidents, enforce rules and provide customer service and assistance to swimmers while keeping a safe aquatic environment; rescues swimmers in danger of drowning and administers first aid as needed; assist with the instruction of aquatic swimming and safety courses and assist in general maintenance and upkeep of the swimming facility. This position may also assist recreational staff with general clerical and recreational activities associated with the City of Roswell Recreation Department.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Regular attendance is required to perform the duties of this position.
- Enforces swimming pool rules among patrons and assists those in accidents of life endangering situations
- Maintains lifeguard station
- Cleans dressing rooms pool areas & pool areas
- Assists in organized swimming classes
- Recognizes and responds effectively to all emergencies.
- Enforces all aquatic facility policies, rules and regulations.
- Attends and participates in in-service training.
- Monitors the use of the aquatic facilities.
- Performs various miscellaneous duties such as answering phone, assists with special events and maintains sanitary and safety standards in and around aquatic facilities.
- Responds to public inquiries about aquatic programs made in person and by telephone. Maintains related records for various aquatic programs.
- Assists in the maintenance of the swimming pool
- Tests of water samples.
- Attends staff meeting and trainings as scheduled.
- Adheres to assigned work schedule.
- Immediately reports suspicious or inappropriate behaviors or abuse.
- Maintain strict discipline to ensure the safety of all patrons.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Training, and Experience:
- Must be at least 16 years of age and be a proficient swimmer. Must attend and pass Lifeguard Certification class within 30 days of hire. Current Life Guard Certificate from the American Red Cross preferred.
Knowledge Of:
- City and Department policies and procedures.
- City, State, and Federal codes and ordinances.
- Basic instructional techniques and recreation trends.
- Aquatic & Recreational needs of senior citizens and youth.
Skill In:
- Good knowledge of lifesaving techniques; some knowledge of accepted public swimming pool policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
- Skilled Swimming techniques, backstroke, front crawl, treading water, submerged swimming.
- Ability to enforce swimming pool policies, procedures, rules and regulations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public; to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess and maintain a Lifeguard Certification. Current Life Guard Certificate from the American Red Cross preferred.
- Must possess and maintain a Class D Driver’s License issued by the state of New Mexico.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed at an indoor and/or outdoor pool, sometimes in confined spaces. Directly responsible for the safety of other people. Subject to cuts, scrapes, bruises, germs, bacteria, viruses, dust. Arduous physical exertion required, including walking, standing, sprinting, running, bending, twisting, and climbing; must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds. Manual and finger dexterity and visual and hearing acuity required. Irregular working hours (including weekends) and a willingness to transfer to other swimming pools required. Must be able to accept multiple demands from several people. Work is performed outdoors and in recreation facilities that include a standard office environment. Work includes the ability to stand, walk, run, and perform other physical tasks on a regular basis.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to pass a rigid background investigation including work history, criminal records, driving records, and other records deemed necessary.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen administered by a City-designated facility.
- Must pass a pre-employment physical examination administered by a City-designated facility.
CONDITIONS OF CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT:
Incumbents and candidates must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record and insurability in accordance with the City’s insurance carrier.
