Description
The Medical Specialist provides medical assessment, treatment, harm reduction services, and follow-up care for patients who are experiencing a behavioral health and / or substance use crisis. This position works in coordination with the Behavioral Health Specialist and area first responders. The Medical Specialist also provides medical services to patients referred from the Round Rock Fire Department and EMS for frequent use of 911 and assists patients with chronic disease management and education.
Posted range is the starting salary. Pay rate offered is based on experience.
Examples of Duties
- Conduct follow-up visits with patients who receive EMS treatment for opioid overdose and for patients with opioid use disorder for whom EMS has provided treatment for reason other than overdose; Create and maintain a judgement free environment for patients to openly discuss substance use.
- Provide naloxone kits to patients at risk of opioid overdose and provide education to clients and family regarding proper indication and administration of naloxone. Discuss risks and dangers of fentanyl pressed pills. Advise clients of availability of treatment options as appropriate.
- Provide clients with a wide spectrum of treatment options to ensure each client receives a treatment plan appropriate for their individual needs and circumstances. Facilitate timely patient induction into Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT). Assist clients with placement into treatment facilities.
- Conduct patient follow ups post MAT induction for medical monitoring and support. Link patients to certified peer recovery coaches, counseling, or other recovery related resources. Provide clients with resources for essential items such as food, housing / shelter, employment, and transportation.
- Identify medical issues during emergent behavioral health crises to implement appropriate interventions. Provide emergency medical care as a First Responder Advanced Paramedic (FRAP) with the Round Rock Fire Department and medical oversight to allow for the clearance of fire and / or EMS units on scene. Interface with law enforcement, fire personnel and EMS to develop and initiate the best patient care plan.
- Coordinate distribution of naloxone to various agencies and community organizations. Provide education on its indication and proper administration with special attention to how these organizations can interface with and train those at risk of overdose and their loved ones. Develop materials for ongoing trainings on substance use, prevention, and recovery.
- Assess and treat referred patients for chronic and / or unmanaged medical and behavioral health conditions and facilitate access to appropriate treatment. Provides patient education regarding symptom management and risk reduction related to chronic or acute disorders and withdrawals.
- Maintain accurate and detailed client records to ensure continuity of care. Document all client encounters and provide a detailed medical, psychiatric and social history. Include accurate contact information for both client and relevant contacts related to client care.
- Work within established partnerships with other organizations to assist in providing comprehensive treatment for all clients. Agencies may include treatment facilities, medical providers, peer support specialists, and other harm reduction agencies.
