What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanic - Public Safety position at City of Round Rock?
Under general supervision, is responsible for diagnosing and performing advanced journey-level emergency vehicle equipment repair and maintenance work. Exercises functional supervision over assigned staff.
Posted range is the starting salary. Pay rate offered is based on experience.
- Diagnoses and repairs complex body components including electronic actuators, valves, and wiring on emergency vehicles.
- Uses a variety of diagnostic techniques, including asking drivers to describe vehicle performance issues, road tests, physical examination, and use of diagnostic devices. Uses vehicle computer electronic systems to interpret failure modes to initiate repairs.
- Diagnoses emergency vehicle equipment failures to determine cause and ensures appropriate repair by other technicians.
- Inspects and repairs, replaces, fabricates, modifies, and installs various types of emergency vehicle equipment.
- Performs major and minor repairs on emergency vehicles, including air conditioning, heating, and ventilation systems; ensures repairs comply with manufacturer's specifications.
- Diagnoses and repairs diesel, gasoline, and two cycle engines and transmissions.
- Fabricates, modifies, and repairs assemblies and components using approved cutting and welding techniques.
- Performs safety checks on all emergency vehicle equipment. Inspects and tests completed work to ensure repairs were performed according to standards.
- Provides assistance, guidance, and direction to other personnel.
- Demonstrates proper work methods and safety procedures to other technicians.
- Completes paperwork required for work orders.
- Schedules all repairs with Fire Department Logistics Officer.
- Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- Five (5) years of experience in servicing and repairing heavy equipment, to include one (1) year experience in servicing and repairing emergency vehicle equipment, is required.
Must possess certification issued by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).
Depending on area of assignment must possess a Texas Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL).
- This position may require you to have or acquire a commercial driver's license (CDL). Federal law requires all CDL holders register with the USDOT Clearinghouse before operating a commercial vehicle. You will be required to enroll in the clearinghouse and sign a consent form allowing the City to run your name through the clearinghouse as a condition of employment.
