The Equipment Maintenance Supervisor will operate and manage a maintenance repair garage in support of city vehicles and equipment. This position is responsible for supervising, administrative tasks, and managing a unionized workforce in accordance with labor agreements, and local, state, and federal guidelines. This position will manage repair priorities, Fleet Management Division initiatives, and maintenance service schedules. The Equipment Maintenance Supervisor is required to work with vendors to coordinate warranty repair work and repairs outside of the maintenance garage scope of services provided.

IDEAL CANDIDATE STATEMENT

The ideal candidate will have experience with supervising a unionized workforce including team building, labor agreements and discipline. They will be capable of maintaining a vehicle repair facility in compliance with local, state, and federal guidelines. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have the following qualities and skills:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Intermediate skills with Microsoft Office computer programs and functions.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including tact, judgment, and patience in working with the public, staff, and City departments.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage priorities and multi-task.
  • Well organized in a continuously evolving environment. 

DEFINITION

To plan, assign, supervise and review the work of a crew of semi-skilled and skilled workers in the mechanical or body repair and maintenance of a wide variety of gasoline and diesel automotive, construction and mechanical equipment.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

General supervision is provided by the Fleet Superintendent. Responsibilities include direct and indirect supervision over equipment maintenance and repair personnel.EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Plan, assign and supervise the work of equipment mechanics, equipment body mechanics, and other skilled and semi-skilled workers engaged in the overhaul, maintenance and repair of a wide variety of automotive, construction and mechanical equipment.
- Inspect work in progress and upon completion for compliance with policies, procedures and standard trade practices.
- Make initial inspections in difficult cases and diagnose mechanical defects.
- Prepare detailed cost estimates and make recommendations regarding feasibility of major repairs.
- Prepare reports; maintain records of time, materials and equipment used; order supplies and materials.
- Coordinate equipment repair work with operating departments.
- Coordinate the establishment of and compliance with work methods and procedures with equipment maintenance administrative personnel.
- Insure the adherence to safe work practices by shop personnel.
- Check new equipment to ensure operational correctness.
- Supervise, train and evaluate subordinates.
- Perform related duties as assigned.Knowledge of:

- Methods, practices, materials and tools of the automotive and heavy equipment mechanic trade.
- Standard practices, methods, tools, materials and equipment of equipment body repair and painting work, including welding procedures, materials and applications.
- Operating and repair characteristics of a variety of heavy equipment.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the work.
- Principles of gasoline and diesel engines.
- Principles and practices of supervision, training and performance evaluation.

Ability to:

- Plan, lay out, and assign the work of skilled mechanics and other shop workers.
- Diagnose defects in and repair a wide variety of heavy equipment.
- Fabricate, repair and modify specialized equipment parts, using gas and arc welding equipment.
- Maintain records and reports.
- Supervise, train and evaluate subordinates.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Five years of experience as a journey level mechanic or equipment body mechanic, including some supervisory experience. Specialized automotive or equipment repair courses.

Should education be used to qualify for this position, then proof of education such as, but not limited to, university/college transcripts and degrees should be submitted with your application and will be required at the time of appointment. Unofficial documents and/or copies are acceptable.  

An applicant with a college degree obtained outside the United States must have education records evaluated by a credentials evaluation service. Evaluation of education records will be due at time of appointment.

  • If you’re requesting Veteran’s credit, a copy of your DD214 must be submitted online with your application or emailed to the Employment Office by the final filing deadline. Information regarding the use of Veteran’s credit can be found in the Civil Service Board rules under rule 4.9C.

2. Training and Experience Exam: (Weighted 100%) – The questions located at the end of the application are the Training and Experience (T&E) Exam. Responses to the T&E questions will be rated and scored. This exam will evaluate the relevance, level, and progression of a candidate's education, training and experience. The exam score will determine your ranking on the eligible list for this job. When completing the T&E questions, please note: 
  • Responses to the T&E questions must be submitted online; paper questionnaires will not be accepted.
  • A resume will not substitute for the information required in the T&E questions.
3. Eligibility: Candidates who pass the Training and Experience Test will be placed on the eligible list. The hiring department may contact candidates for interview at any time during the life of the one-year list. Candidate’s eligibility expires one year from the date of notification of a passing score for the Equipment Maintenance Supervisor examination.  

4. Screening Committee: (Pass/Fail)– All candidates that pass the examination and are in one of the top three ranks will have their application forwarded to the hiring department for review. The hiring department will select the most competitive applications for further consideration. Human Resources will only evaluate employment applications for the minimum qualifications, as stated on the job announcement, for applications selected by the hiring department. 

5. Conditional Hire: Upon receipt of a conditional offer, the selected candidate must complete and pass Live Scan/fingerprinting. If applicable, candidates may also need to pass a pre-employment medical exam, controlled substance and/or alcohol test, and possess any required licensure or certification prior to receiving a start date from the Department. Failure to meet these prerequisites will be grounds for withdrawal of your conditional offer of employment.
