JOB DESCRIPTION
LIBRARY ASSISTANT I
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the general supervision of the Department Supervisor or designee. Performs a variety of library
work involving the circulation and processing of library materials. Responsible for implementing library
practices in circulation operations in accordance with applicable City codes and Departmental
policies. Duties are generally performed independently. Work is reviewed through reports,
observations, and obtained results.
JOB FUNCTIONS
Shelve library materials, straighten, and check shelves for accuracy, shift materials when needed due
to crowding, empty exterior book drops, and fill items on hold request lists.
Staff the circulation desk; assist patrons with check in and out process in person and at self-checkouts.
Handle monetary transactions and reconcile daily reports.
Respond to patron inquiries in person and on the telephone, assist customers in locating different areas
of the library, and place holds on requested materials.
Provide access to study and meeting rooms as required. Build awareness of library programs to market
verbally to patrons at front desk, answer questions or refer to other staff.
Check-in materials returned from other library locations. Prepare and send holds to other locations.
Create themed displays of library materials to promote circulation.
Price items and stock Friends of the Library Bookstore as needed.
Evening and some weekend required.
Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS
Knowledge of Dewey Decimal System for shelving materials.
Ability to work with the public is essential.
Ability to utilize independent judgment.

Knowledge of cash and credit card handling.
Ability to provide excellent customer service to patrons and fellow staff.
Ability to acquire knowledge of public library methods and procedures and the operation of library
equipment, including computers, RFID readers, and scanners.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing with fellow staff and patrons.
Ability to use a computer and ability to learn and operate online library catalogs and other library
related software.
Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, GED. Valid Florida Driver’s License.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction).
Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid).
Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
Reaching, bending, light lifting.
Use of fingers, use of hands.
Sitting, bending, standing, walking.
