JOB DESCRIPTION
SWIM INSTRUCTOR
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under close supervision of the Recreation Facility Manager, or designee. Performs varied routine
duties in assisting the Leisure Services Department. Responsible for water safety and the proper
instruction of swim lesson classes. Work is performed with some independence. Work is reviewed
through conferences and results obtained.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Provide small group swim lessons, private lessons, and instruction.
Evaluation and tracking of student’s progress.
Communicates with parents/guardians on the activities and development of student’s swim skills.
Actively scans pool and deck for dangerous situations and preventable accidents.
Assist in maintaining aquatic areas and assuring cleanliness and free from hazards.
Provide information regarding safety rules and procedures.
Maintain daily logs and records, as required.
Maintain daily inspections on facility and equipment.
Performs special assignments and/or other duties as assigned.
Evening and/or weekend work will be required.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Attend and participate in mandatory in-service trainings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS
Knowledge of a variety of recreational activities and equipment.
Knowledge of the rules and regulations governing the play of a variety of recreational games.
Ability to responsibly oversee the use of a recreational facility.
Ability to establish and maintain effective and courteous relationships with the public.
Ability to maintain simple records.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Demonstrated reliability and dependability.
Ability to work flexible hours.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Current Starfish Swimming, American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or equivalent certification or
ability to obtain. 16 years of age, experience working with or instructing children. CPR and First Aid
certified or ability to obtain.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction).
Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid).
Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
Reaching, bending, and lifting.
Use of fingers, use of hands.
Sitting, standing, walking, running.
Ability to access, input and retrieve information and data from a computer.
Ability to access file cabinets for filing and retrieval of data.
Ability to react to emergency situations by quick movements, strenuous activity, and on occasion
assist or lift persons in distress of varying weights.
Must be able to swim.
