Job Summary
We are seeking a passionate and knowledgeable EMS Trainer to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality training and education to current and aspiring EMS professionals. This position involves instructing various EMS courses, including basic and advanced life support, trauma care, patient assessment, and more. What you will do:
As an EMS Trainer, you will play a vital role in developing, delivering, and managing comprehensive training programs to ensure emergency medical personnel are prepared to respond effectively in critical situations. You will design and revise curricula covering basic and advanced life support, trauma and pediatric care, and other essential EMS topics, aligning all training with local, state, and federal regulations. Through classroom instruction, hands-on exercises, and simulation-based drills, you will assess trainee performance, provide mentorship, and facilitate continuing education and recertification. Additionally, you will maintain training equipment, coordinate joint exercises with fire, police, and regional partners, and contribute to public EMS awareness initiatives. Your expertise will help enhance department protocols, improve response efficiency, and ensure compliance with evolving EMS standards. This role also involves maintaining detailed training records, preparing reports for leadership, and occasionally responding to emergencies for real-world training applications.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
May include but are not limited to, the following:
- Comprehensive understanding of human anatomy, physiology, EMS protocols and regulations, medical procedures, pharmacology, and fire department operations.
- Ability to effectively teach and communicate complex concepts in a clear, concise manner to various audiences.
- Skilled in evaluating and assessing the performance of trainees, providing constructive feedback.
- Proficient in using EMS training equipment, software, and other educational technologies.
- Strong organizational, time management, and multitasking abilities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, collaborating effectively with other trainers, EMS personnel, and fire department leadership.
- Ability to perform physical tasks involved in EMS training and respond to emergency situations (e.g., lifting, moving equipment).
- Ability to participate in field-based training exercises, including emergency medical scenarios and drills.
- Work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on training schedules and department needs if required.

The EMS Trainer Position is represented by IAFF Local #314 Salem Professional Firefighters Union

Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
- Must pass the pre-employment background check which may include a psychological assessment, and drug test (including marijuana).
- Must have an Oregon Driver’s license, or the ability to obtain an Oregon license within 30 days of residency and meet the City of Salem’s driving standards.
- A minimum of three (3) consecutive years of experience as a full-time, paid transporting Paramedic with an agency whose primary responsibility is emergency medical services required to apply. (Volunteer, sleeper/resident, paid-on-call, or seasonal does not apply.
- Oregon Paramedic or, National Registry certification as a Paramedic, and the ability to qualify for State of Oregon reciprocity, or possession of EMT-P from another state and be able to qualify for State of Oregon reciprocity per the Oregon Health Authority (ORS 682 and OAR 333-265).
- Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- Instructor certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), or ability to obtain within 6 months, and other EMS-related programs.
