What are the responsibilities and job description for the Automotive Mechanic position at CITY OF SALEM TECHNOLOGY SYSTEMS - CITY OF SALEM?
Performs skilled trades work maintaining and repairing a variety of automotive and construction equipment, maintaining work/shop area, performing road service calls, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the City Garage Supervisor.
Essential Functions
- Performs routine and preventive maintenance and repair on a variety of vehicles and equipment including automobiles, school busses, tractors, heavy construction equipment, and landscaping equipment; performs tune-ups, checking lights, tires, brake linings, wiper blades, horns, suspensions, etc.
- Operates complex specialized automotive diagnostic testing equipment in the diagnosis and troubleshooting of mechanical problems, determines required repair or replacement of parts, and initiates repair.
- Fabricates replacement parts and metal for repairs to vehicles and equipment.
- Performs hydraulic maintenance, diagnostics, and repair; builds and fixes hydraulic hoses.
- Replaces or disassembles and rebuilds engines; makes necessary repairs and adjustments; replaces worn or defective parts.
- Performs diversified electrical work on automotive equipment such as diagnosing electrical shorts, installing batteries and terminals, repairing and adjusting lights and repairing generators, alternators, and starters.
- Changes, repairs, and replaces tires; mounts and balances car and large truck tires; replaces and checks brakes; performs exhaust work.
- Performs road service calls on vehicles and equipment; performs minor repairs on site, if possible; tows and recovers vehicles and equipment using rollback and wrecker.
- Maintains shop area in a clean and orderly state; opens and secures shop, tools, and equipment.
- Maintains equipment and supplies for work orders; orders and picks up supplies.
- Performs street maintenance duties as assigned including cutting trees, repairing roadways, picking up dead animals, etc.; operates light and heavy-duty equipment.
