What are the responsibilities and job description for the Literacy Assistant (Temporary) position at City of Salinas?
The City of Salinas invites applicants for the temporary position of Literacy Assistant. This a non-benefited position. Employees are limited to working a maximum of 25 hours per week and must not exceed 1,000 hours per fiscal year.

Summary of Duties: Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of general and clerical duties, including those related to Literacy Services for the Library and Community Services Department, with a strong emphasis on providing public service.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: Receives general supervision from the Division Manager or other supervisor as assigned. Exercises no supervision.
- Performs general and confidential clerical support services for the literacy program
- Prepares and maintains new learner files, and assists with the placement of new learners into small groups, and matching with one-on-one tutors
- Keeps ongoing records of student attendance and progress
- Assists with data collection, including gathering and organizing data related to literacy programs, projects, or grant reports
- Assists in the preparation, scheduling and setting up of tutor training sessions
- Assists with the matching of tutors and learners (i.e. making appointments, etc.)
- Contacts tutor/learner pairs and small groups regarding progress
- Maintains files and records of tutors and learners in both electronic and paper format
- Orders and maintains supplies and equipment; maintains inventory controls
- Performs a wide variety of technical and clerical work related to acquisition, cataloging, and circulation of literacy materials
- Updates literacy staff schedule weekly
- May assign routine tasks and provide technical instruction to volunteers and lower-level literacy staff as directed by division manager
- May also assist with fundraising activities, preparation of Literacy Newsletter, outside promotion and recruitment of new learners and tutors as necessary
- Promotes and maintains safety in the workplace
- May perform duties related to Literacy and Library Clerk and other related duties as required

Education: High School diploma/GED
Experience: Two years of general office assistant work experience or two years of working with the public in a library setting (preferably assisting with a literacy program or other relevant program). Bi-lingual skills (Spanish) highly desirable.
Licenses and Certifications: A valid California Class C Driver’s License.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Physical, mental and emotional stamina to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position; manual dexterity sufficient to write, use telephone, business machines and related equipment; vision sufficient to read printed materials and distinguish colors; and safely operate a motor vehicle; hearing sufficient to conduct in person and telephone conversations; speaking ability in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in a normal conversational distance, on the telephone and in addressing groups; physical agility to push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop, climb and reach overhead; physical mobility sufficient to move about the work environment, physical strength to lift up to 20 lbs.; may occasionally lift up to 30 pounds of books and teaching materials; physical stamina sufficient to sit for prolonged periods of time; mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions.
Business office working environment subject to sitting at a desk for long periods of time, bending, crouching, or kneeling at files, occasionally moving boxes of materials from one site to another, reaching in all directions and occasional periods of time working at a computer terminal.
Employee must complete SB 1343 Sexual Harassment Prevention Training within six months of appointment and every two years thereafter.
