MAINTENANCE PERSON I

SUMMARY           

Sweep streets, gutters, alleys and sidewalks for summer and winter maintenance.  Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, streets and alleys. Does raking, pick and shovel work, loads or unloads materials to or from trucks; does excavating using hand tools; operates wheelbarrows; applies cold patch, hot mix, tack coats, and crack fill material; installs and repairs signs; performs a wide variety of similar tasks in the reconstruction, repair and maintenance of streets.  Performs groundskeeping tasks at City parks, buildings, and other City-owned properties; mows and trims grass; operates weed whips; weeds flower beds; fertilizes trees and turf; prunes, trims and removes trees and bushes; loads and/or chips brush; rakes leaves and grass and loads into trucks; plants and transplants trees and bushes; mulches tree and flower beds; collects refuse and garbage and empties into containers; cleans restrooms and pavilions; repairs, paints and installs park equipment; performs a wide variety of similar tasks relating to parks, trees and groundskeeping.  Assists in the repair, maintenance and installation of the sanitary and storm sewer collection systems.  Assists in the repair, and maintenance of the water distribution system, fire hydrants, water meters and other appurtenances.  Reads water meters and records readings accurately.  Assist with the maintenance requirements, burials and installation of markers for the Cemetery. Hangs banners and flowerpots on Michigan Ave for Saline Mainstreet.  Sets out barriers for all City events and parades.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have on-call working experience
  • Must be available to work unscheduled hours and provide a telephone number where employee can be reached during an emergency or after hour call out

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

TRAINING

  • Successful completion of training regarding utilities and the ability to read blueprints  

DRIVING

  • Valid CDL - Class A with Air Brakes and Tanker Endorsement N

  • Knowledge, ability, and skill to safely operate pickups, automobiles, small dump trucks and turf equipment.??
  • Ability to learn the safe operation of construction equipment, power and non-motorized hand tools and equipment
  • Ability to follow Department rules and regulations, procedures and City policies
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow traffic laws
  • Ability to maintain accurate written records as required
  • Ability to detect and report property or equipment defects
  • Ability to move to specified sites in order to read water meters often located in basements??
  • Ability to enter a confined space with the proper safety equipment
  • Ability to climb ladders to perform maintenance activities such as painting and building repairs
  • Mow lawns seasonally and weed whip
  • Regular and routine onsite attendance
