What are the responsibilities and job description for the MECHANIC I (FLEET SERVICES) position at City of San Angelo Texas?

We are currently seeking:
A mechanic I who, under general supervision, maintains, repairs and adjusts City vehicles, equipment and machinery, in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Performing preventive maintenance on City vehicles to maximize the effective life cycle of the equipment.
- Diagnosing mechanical and electrical problems on vehicles and equipment; performing maintenance and repairs within scope of authority, and in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
- Performing all phases of basic automotive maintenance, including tune-ups, trouble shooting and repairs, tire repairs, electrical diagnostics, brake work, engine diagnostics, hydraulics and lubrications.
- Diagnosing and repairing vehicle component systems, engines, transmissions, power trains, braking, and steering systems; using technical manuals and computer equipment to diagnose and correct vehicle problems.
- Repairing electrical, fuel supply, brakes, air conditioning and engine cooling systems; performing emergency repairs in the field as required; installing auxiliary and specialized equipment; verifying equipment meets safety standards before returning to fleet operations.
- Performing mandated annual safety inspections for City vehicles.
- Performing welding tasks, fabricating and repairing metal parts and components.
- Ordering parts as needed; maintaining shop, yard, and equipment in clean and orderly condition.
- Maintaining work orders, records and logging services performed and general vehicle information.
- Performing fine calibrations requiring differentiation between colored wires.
- Utilizing proper safety precautions in all work performed, recognizing, avoiding, and reporting unsafe acts, conditions, accidents and injuries.
- Participating in continuing education and certification opportunities.
- Hours: Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 4:00pm
- Regular and timely attendance is required.

Requirement and Skills:
- Safe and effective repair and maintenance of vehicles according to City standards.
- Inspecting, diagnosing and repairing mechanical, brake, fuel and electrical problems in gasoline and diesel vehicles.
- Reading and interpreting technical manuals and specifications.
- Safe use of power and hand tools, and chemicals, lubricants and cleaning compounds.
- Closely following verbal and written instructions and procedures.
- Understand and adhere to City policies, procedures, and safety rules.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent; and two years' experience in vehicle maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. ASE Certifications preferred, but not required.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
- Must possess a valid Texas Driver License with a good driving record. Class A/B CDL may be required. If a Class A/B CDL is obtained, held, and utilized during the course of employment, employee will be subject to DOT guidelines and regulations.
- Applicants with an out-of-state driver license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure.
- Safety Inspector certification from Texas Department of Public Safety is required within six months of hire.
Required Knowledge of:
- Federal and state traffic and safety regulations.
- Methods, tools and equipment used in repair and maintenance of vehicles.
- City safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Safety practices in a workshop environment.
Physical Demands / Work Environment:
- Must have own tools sufficient to perform the daily repairs and duties.
- Work is performed in repair and maintenance facilities.
- Moderate physical demands; strength sufficient to lift and move items weighing up to seventy-nine (79) pounds; may be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment.
