Under administrative direction, is responsible for providing expertise in the review of new construction plans for code compliance. Inspects and performs operational tests of complex fire protection systems in high-risk or high-value structures. Working conditions are primarily inside an office environment with occasional visits to outdoor construction sites. Exercises direct supervision over assigned staff.

This position is an "unclassified" position and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status, and can be terminated at any time for any reason.

- Reviews complex new construction plans for compliance with fire protection applicable codes and life safety requirements.
- Evaluates fire protection systems, equipment, and procedures.
- Conducts technical studies of fire and protection systems.
- Evaluates water supply and fire protection systems.
- Provides technical assistance to personnel in fire prevention operations, administration, training and other areas.
- Tests and inspects complex or unusual fire protection systems or methods.
- Interprets and evaluates existing ordinances and City codes as they apply to planned projects.
- Recommends alternate methods of providing acceptable fire and life safety.
- Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or other engineering field from an accredited college, university or engineering school.
- Four (4) years of experience in the fire protection field.
- No substitution for education allowed.
- License to practice engineering in the State of Texas as a Professional Engineer OR
- Must obtain a license to practice in the State of Texas within eighteen (18) months of employment or two (2) consecutive exam cycles.
- Must obtain International Code Council (ICC) Certification as a Fire Plans Examiner within one (1) year of employment.
- Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.
- Experience with Fire Modeling, Stair Pressurization, Smoke Control Systems, Fire Sprinkler and Fire Alarm design.
- Experience with enforcement or design under the IFC and NFPA.
- Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
