Job Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for processing juvenile offenders, taking missing person reports, entering data into and updating the National Crime Investigation Center and Texas Crime Investigation Center (NCIC/TCIC) databases, and providing basic information and police forms to the public. Working conditions are primarily inside an office environment. May exercise functional supervision over assigned staff.

Work Location

Public Safety Headquarters; 315 S. Santa Rosa San Antonio, Tx 78205

2:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m., and 10:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m., Thursday - Monday. Schedule includes weekends and holidays. Subject to change at the department's discretion based on work needs.

Essential Job Functions

  • Photographs and fingerprints juveniles processed in Juvenile Processing Office and enters juvenile information into database.
  • Notifies guardians verbally regarding juvenile offender status and/or located runaways.
  • Notifies schools verbally, prepares, and sends letters of notification regarding juvenile offender detention status, as required.
  • Takes missing person reports from field officers and walk-in complainants and enters missing person into NCIC/TCIC. Makes required follow-up calls and documents updated information in missing person file.
  • Creates missing person flyers for distribution to internal and external entities.
  • Identifies factors related to cases where transmission of Amber/Silver Alerts to Texas Department of Public Safety occurs.
  • Collaborates with and provides information to the Homicide Unit, Special Victims Unit, Southwest Texas Fusion Center and others as required.
  • Researches police reports and databases, formulates monthly reports to document unit's activities.
  • Maintains expunction of juvenile records and file purging as required by State law.
  • Assists external law enforcement agencies in collecting information and/or locating missing persons in their jurisdictions.
  • Answers a multi-phone line system responding to callers, provides basic information and police forms to the public, and redirects calls as needed.
  • Sorts and distributes mail and incoming police reports, faxes and subpoenas.
  • Reports to court and testifies as required by subpoena.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
  • Two (2) years' experience in a position requiring frequent interaction with adolescents in an educational or criminal justice position.
  • Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.
  • Valid Texas Criminal Investigation Center and National Criminal Investigation Center (TCIC/NCIC) Certification required within one (1) year of employment.
  • Applicants for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position: Felony convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A & B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor convictions, an Open Arrest for any criminal offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and family violence convictions.

Applicant Information

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Knowledge of the services provided by the Police Department.
  • Knowledge of and competency using the TCIC/NCIC system.
  • Knowledge of the Penal Code and Code of Criminal Procedures.
  • Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of Police Department rules, regulations, policies, and standard operating procedures.
  • Knowledge of documents produced by courts.
  • Skill in taking photographs and fingerprinting, as required.
  • Skill in utilizing personal computers and associated software applications in the completion of assignments.
  • Skill in providing quality customer service to the general public.
  • Skill in sorting and distributing mail, reports, faxes, and subpoenas; skill in organizing and maintaining records and files.
  • Ability to operate a computer keyboard and other basic office equipment.
  • Ability to consistently report to court and testify in a timely and professional manner, as required by subpoena.
  • Ability to learn the laws, rules, and regulations relating to offender processing.
  • Ability to operate a camera, multi-phone line system, fax machine, copier and other basic office equipment.
  • Ability to compile and prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
