Under general supervision, is responsible for performing semi-skilled work of a routine nature in the operation and minor maintenance of a light to medium size truck. As a highly visible representative of the San Antonio Public Library, the driver must be conscientious and able to maintain their courtesy and poise even when confronted with irate drivers or difficult situations. Must effectively meet customer expectations by providing prompt professional and courteous service to both staff and the general public. Exercises no supervision.
This position is an "unclassified" position and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason.

Work Hours
8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Saturday and two weekdays Monday - Friday. Assigned days and hours will vary based on department needs.
- Inspects vehicle for proper mechanical functioning.
- Collects items from branch libraries on assigned route and transports to appropriate location.
- Performs labor and maintenance duties, including loading and unloading truck, frequently lifting and carrying equipment or materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Receives, sorts, and packs all materials for redelivery on the same day materials are received.
- Completes a driver's delivery report daily.
- Consults with supervisor on any route changes or hazardous driving conditions.
- Performs labor and maintenance duties, including loading and unloading truck.
- Cleans and inspects the vehicle to insure proper maintenance and safe operating condition at the end of each day.
- Accompanies library staff and operates city owned vehicle during off-site programming events.
- Operates flat-bed, pick-up truck, or cargo van.
- Operates light equipment and trucks used to haul materials to branch libraries or other designated sites.
- May perform basic clerical duties as needed.
- Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
- Formal or informal training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
- One (1) year of professional driving experience.
- This position requires a valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.
- Skill in utilizing a personal computer and associated software.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.

- Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
- Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.
- Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in vehicle operation.
- Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
- Skill in operating light trucks, light trailers, and related automotive equipment.
- Skill in operating hoists, drums, and other auxiliary equipment frequently attached to trucks.
- Skill in utilizing a two-way radio.
- Ability to interpret and follow simple instructions.
- Ability to learn the geography of the City and assigned routes.
- Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
- Working conditions are in a shop or outside environment with frequent exposure to temperature extremes, dust; damp/wet surfaces, and high noise level.
