We invite you to join the City of San Bernardino's Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department as a part-time Recreation Specialist!
The Ideal Candidate:
A creative and customer-focused leader with experience in recreation or special event programming. The ideal candidate is organized, engaging, and passionate about providing quality community programs.
This position is subject to extended shifts, weekend or rotational duty assignments.
Provides courteous and expeditious customer service to the general public and City department staff.
Organizes, directs and instructs hobby groups, youth groups and special interest groups; instructs in areas of specialization which may include one or more of the following: ceramics, art, arts and crafts, painting, photography, calligraphy, music (instrumental or vocal), sign language, and other cultural disciplines in the arts, crafts and humanities.
Maintains discipline, attendance and activity reports; prepares and submits reports, inspects facilities, equipment and recreational areas for maintenance and safety hazards and recommends maintenance and repair work as needed; issues and maintains equipment and supplies; confers with concerned individuals to adapt recreational programs to local needs and stimulate interest in planned activities.
Routinely adheres to and maintains a positive attitude towards City and Department goals; and, performs other related work as required.
Knowledge of and ability to:
Rules and skills involved in specialized recreational activities;
Objectives and methods of recreational programs;
Techniques of organizing group social and recreational activities;
Effective teaching techniques of all age groups or special populations;
Group psychology and community organizations.
Lead groups and individuals in recreational activities;
Instruct groups and individuals in various sports, games, cultural or other recreational activities;
Express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing;
Follow oral and written instructions;
Establish and maintain harmonious relationships with all those contacted in the course of work;
Transport materials and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds;
See in the normal visual range, with or without correction;
Hear in the normal audio range, with or without correction;
Work indoors and out in a variety of environmental conditions.
- Graduation from high school.
- Minimum of one (1) year paid or two (2) years of volunteer experience as a primary instructor in social and cultural activities or in the development of special events programs.
- Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of two (2) years.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.

Successful candidates will be placed on an eligible list, and highly qualified candidates will be referred to the appointing authority for further consideration. Candidates advancing in the selection process will receive information/instructions via email only.

- Background Investigation with the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
- Pre-employment Medical Exam, including drug test and a TB test
