What are the responsibilities and job description for the Volunteer (Unpaid) position at City of San Bernardino?
General
- Assist with story time, arts & crafts, and other programs.
- Clean books, ensure they are correctly shelved, and maintain order.
- Communicate effectively, demonstrate patience, and work well with others.
- Follow directions, respect confidentiality, and support the Library and the San Bernardino community.
California Room
- Welcome and assist visitors to the California Room.
- Answer general history questions about San Bernardino.
- Direct visitors to specific areas in the California Room.
- Assist with carrying out daily operations.
- Answer phone calls and questions.
- Handle filing and maintenance of office space.
Parks and Recreation Department:
Administrative
- Provide front desk support by screening phone calls, greeting visitors, and delivering exceptional customer service
- Assist with filing, restocking information flyers, and updating bulletin board displays
- Help prepare materials for special events and recreational programs
- Support large format printing and production tasks
- Contribute to our Military Banner Program by assisting with the printing, cutting, sewing, and grommeting of banners to honor military service members
Aquatics Center
- Assist with facility cleaning and maintenance, and restock flyers or update bulletin boards
- Escort patrons to and from swimming lessons, distribute life jackets, and supervise water slide activities for safety and fun
- Provide front desk support, including answering phones, filing, and completing swimming lesson certifications
- Volunteers with proper licensing and certification may also serve as lifeguards or offer additional assistance
Community Center
- Support staff and instructors during center events and activities (assisting with instruction, event décor, setup, breakdown, serving, and more)
- Provide front desk assistance, offering a friendly and helpful environment
- Prepare supplies for programs, activities, and events
- Lead classes or activities, sharing your talents and passions with others
- Assist with managing the game room and making it enjoyable for all participant
- Range Facility - Assist with target changes, brass collection, range maintenance, and officer paperwork.
- Detective Bureau - Help with call screening, greeting visitors, case preparation, evidence transport, and clerical duties.
- Personnel & Training - Assist with filing training documents, typing labels, and office support tasks.
- Property & Evidence - Handle evidence storage, retrieval, filing, and data entry; climb ladders for warehouse work.
- Traffic Office - Enter citation data, provide customer service, and assist with vehicle/impound releases.
- Records Division - Data entry for destroyed weapons, assist with the officer's counter, and document scanning.
- Front Counter/Public Information Assistant - Answer inquiries and direct citizens; bilingual skills preferred.
- Volunteer Interpreters - Provide translation services for interviews, incidents, and literature in law enforcement.
Minimum qualifications may vary by department. Candidates who meet the specified criteria will be referred to the appropriate department(s) seeking volunteers.
Certain departments may require candidates to hold a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
As a condition of your volunteer assignment, you will be required to successfully complete a criminal background check before your start date.Selection Process:All applicants must submit clear, concise, and complete information regarding their qualifications for the position, including detailed responses to all supplemental questions.
The selection process will consist of:
- Application Review
- Background Investigation with the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
- Complete Volunteer Waiver
- Volunteer Orientation
As a condition of your volunteer assignment, you will be asked to successfully complete a criminal background check prior to your start date. Volunteers are subject to the selection process.
