Description

THE POSITION
Under direction of the Information Technology Manager, the Information Systems Specialist performs a variety of specialized duties in connection with the coordination, installation, maintenance and repair of computer software, equipment and peripherals. Installs and troubleshoots software and hardware problems relating to microcomputers, local area network, wireless network, wide area network, and all communication equipment. Maintains computer hardware / software inventory; recommends and implements policies and procedures for network security functions and operations. Provides training and technical assistance to microcomputer users; consults with department representatives to determine software requirements and develops specifications.
The Information Systems Specialist will also conduct research; plan and maintain the City's network security and data integrity; organize the acquisition of computer hardware, software and communication systems; participate in budget planning for future technology needs; evaluate and make recommendations on major acquisitions; assure compliance and adherence to all local, State and Federal laws relating to data retention and dissemination of data throughout the computer network; assure appropriate security designs are in place to protect confidentiality and security data; maintain the City's internet website and an emergency data recovery plan to assure all data is secure and retrievable; perform some on-call work and respond to off-duty calls to resolve information systems and communications systems; and perform other related duties as assigned.

Any combination of experience and education may be considered. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be :
- Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience related to applications, systems, or network development, administration, and / or support.
- Relevant school / college coursework in computer science, information systems, or a closely related field. Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or related field is highly desirable.
- Specialized training and / or certification in computer applications and / or systems is highly desirable.
- Local government experience is desirable.
- Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License and ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record while employed with the city.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
Candidates receiving a conditional offer of employment from the City for this position shall be required to satisfactorily complete a (1) supplemental application, (2) medical examination and drug screen, (3) Live Scan fingerprint check, (4) work experience and education check, and (5) professional reference check. Unsatisfactory results and / or failure to successfully complete any part of pre-employment processes 1-5 shall void any conditional offer of employment for this position. Vacation : Accrue 80 hours of vacation leave per year to start. Annual accrual rate increases up to 160 hours per year pursuant to the authorized vacation accrual schedule.
