The Department is recruiting for part-time, unbenefited Assistant Swimming Pool Manager and Swimming Pool Manager positions in the Recreation Services Division (RS) for the Citywide Aquatics programming.

The Assistant Swimming Pool Manager classification is covered by the Pay Floor Rate and pay starts at $29.45 hourly. The salary range includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation.

These positions may be required to work mornings, evenings, and weekend hours during the dates of June 2, 2025 – August 15, 2025, in accordance with the assigned pool location. If selected for the position, these hours and dates will be MANADATORY as part of the candidate's work schedule. These positions are part-time, unbenefited with a limit of less than 20 hours per week or less than 1,040 hours per year. There is no guarantee of hours or longevity. All programs adhere to Santa Clara County, Public Health guidelines to ensure the health and well-being of staff. Face coverings and Personal Protective Equipment are provided. Staff may assist with daily health screenings, cleaning, and sanitization in City programs following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.  

Note: Candidates are not required to possess the Lifeguard Training and American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor's (WSI) certificate at the time of completing the application or to interview for the position. If selected for the position, the Citywide Aquatics program will be offering Lifeguard Training and American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor's (WSI) certification classes, if needed. The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training certification age requirement is at least 15 years old and the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification age requirement is at least 16 years old.

Assistant Swimming Pool Manager:  The Assistant Swimming Pool Manager participates with the Swimming Pool Manager in the management and supervision at a City operated swimming pool facility and performs related work as required. This position may be required to supervise other pool personnel in the absence of the Swimming Pool Manager and may perform lifeguard activities and instruct in all categories of swimming classes.  

Responsibilities for this position include, but may not be limited to: 

  • Assisting the Swimming Pool Manager in the planning, organizing and direction of recreational swimming and swim instruction programs. 
  • Participating in the supervision of lifeguards and other pool personnel. 
  • Participating in the in-service training program for all personnel covering policies and procedures of the City and safety responsibilities of the pool operation. 
  • Performing the duties of a lifeguard whenever necessary. 
  • Participating in the management of a swimming pool facility, including the establishment of necessary procedures for the collection of fees, preparing attendance reports, accident reports, and other routine financial reports on a regular basis. 
  • Preparing work schedules and assignments as delegated by the Swimming Pool Manager. 

Swimming Pool Manager:  The Swimming Pool Manager position is responsible for planning, organizing, directing and supervising swimming and swim instruction programs at a City operated swimming pool facility.  

Responsibilities for this position include, but may not be limited to: 

  • Enforcing policies and procedures, which ensure efficient and effective operation of pool facilities, including personnel management and training.  
  • Collecting attendance fees and completing attendance, accident, and accounting reports. 
  • Supervising health and safety factors of the pool, including first aid. 
  • Programming and scheduling events at the pool. 
  • Scheduling and supervising the work of lifeguards and other pool personnel. 
  • Maintaining personnel records and preparing necessary reports of time worked, assignments, and personnel requirements. 
  • Assisting with janitorial duties, limited pool maintenance, including daily chemical analysis/testing, pool cleaning, cleaning of bathrooms as needed. 
  • Supervising in-service training for all personnel, including pre-season meetings of all personnel covering policies and procedures of the City, and safety responsibilities.? 
  • Attend meetings and trainings as required. 

Assistant Swimming Pool Managers and Swimming Pool Managers may be placed at any of the City pools. Currently, the City of San José has four pools operated by the City of San Jose. 

Camden Community Center: 3369 Union Ave., San José, CA 95124 

Fair Swim Center: 1350 Bacchus Dr., San José, CA 95124 

Mayfair Community Center: 2039 Kammerer Ave., San José, CA 95116 

Rotary Ryland Pool: 421 North First St., San José, CA 95112 

Minimum Qualifications

The following minimum qualifications, including required certificates must be obtained by the new-hire effective starting date.  

Assistant Swimming Pool Manager:

Education: Completion of high school or possession of General Educational Development (GED) Certificate or California Proficiency Certificate.  
  
Experience: Two (2) full seasons (approximately 760 hours) of work in swimming pool management, lifeguarding, swimming instruction, or related activity.  
  
Licenses/Certificates

  • Possession of current certificate indicating successful completion of an approved course in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation for the Professional Rescuer (CPR/FPR) as prescribed by the American Red Cross or as prescribed by the American Heart Association; B.C.L.S. – C, with a completion date less than one year old at the time of appointment.?  
  • Possession of current Lifeguard Training certificate in First Aid. 
  • Possession of current certificate in First Aid, as prescribed by the State Department of Health, at the time of appointment. 
  • Possession of current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor's Authorization Certificate (WSI).  

Swimming Pool Manager: 

Education: Completion of high school or possession of General Educational Development (GED) Certificate or California Proficiency Certificate.  

 Experience
: Three (3) full seasons (approximately 1,140 hours) of work in swimming pool management, lifeguarding, swimming instruction, or related activity.

  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of first aid and artificial respiration. 
  • Knowledge of swimming pool hazards and safety precautions. 
  • Ability to plan, organize, and direct a recreational program in swimming for both adults and children. 
  • Knowledge of proper cash collection, handling, safeguarding, depositing, and accounting principles.  
  • Knowledge of swimming and lifesaving techniques and the ability to instruct classes involving this knowledge to participants and Lifeguards. 

Reliability: Completes quality work assignments in a timely and efficient manner; fulfills responsibilities and maintains confidentiality as appropriate. 

Flexibility: Makes effective decisions and achieves desired results in the midst of major changes in responsibilities, work processes, timeframes, performance expectations, organizational culture, or work environment. 

Coaching: Provides guidance, opportunities, and motivation to develop and strengthen knowledge, skills, and competencies to improve employee’s capabilities. 

Teamwork & Interpersonal Skills: Develops effective relationships with co-workers and supervisors by helping others accomplish tasks and using collaboration and conflict resolution skills. 

Customer Service: Demonstrates the ability to anticipate customers' needs and deliver services effectively and efficiently using professional demeanor.  

Communication Skills: Effectively conveys information and expresses thoughts and facts clearly, orally, and in writing; demonstrates effective use of listening skills; displays openness to other people’s ideas and thoughts.
