The Position
Definition: The Maintenance Aide classification is an entry-level position which performs a wide variety of routine tasks in connection with cleaning, maintenance, and repair of streets, sewers, parks, equipment, public buildings and related City facilities; performs related work as required.
Supervision Exercised and Received: Exercises no supervision. Receives general supervision from the assigned supervisor or higher-level staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions: The essential functions of the classification may include, but are not limited to, the functions below and are subject to changes in operational necessity.
Removes trash and empties litter cans from City property and streets; cuts grass and weeds; rakes and picks-up leaves;
Services motor vehicles and other equipment with gas, oil and diesel fuels;
Performs a variety of manual custodial and building maintenance tasks related to the cleaning and care of public buildings and related facilities; opens and closes parks, gates and restrooms;
Assists in the repair of playground equipment and related buildings and facilities;
Follows all safety rules and protocols included in the Injury and Illness Prevention Program; takes appropriate action as required to identify and correct safety hazards and report safety concerns to his/her supervisor;
Performs required duties under the City's disaster response plan;
Surveys streets for lamp outages in street lights and pedestrian signal crossings on pre-determined route; reports outages to supervisor;
Removes and/or paints over graffiti from City buildings and facilities;
Prepares, paints surfaces and paints new installations and repair jobs, and;
Assists with planting, trimming and minor pruning in parks and other City facilities, and;

Qualifications
Experience and Education Guidelines: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would most likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education: High school diploma or certified equivalent (GED).
Licenses/certifications/other requirements: Must be willing to work such hours as are necessary to accomplish the job requirements; travel to attend meetings, seminars and conferences. Classification requires the possession and continued maintenance of a valid class "C" California driver's license for operating a motor vehicle.

Part-time employees accrue paid leave after working twelve consecutive pay periods (which equals six months) at a rate of four (4) hours for every 50 hours worked.
