What are the responsibilities and job description for the Youth Sports Official position at City of San Luis Obispo?
JOB SUMMARY: Officiates and/or keeps score for various games in the youth recreational sports program.
Average hours per week: 5-15
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:
This class is distinguished from Adult Sports Official in that the latter officiates and keeps score in the adult recreation program.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Employees in this classification work under direct supervision of the Recreation Coordinator. Employees assigned to this classification may supervise assistant coaches or volunteers.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks that may be found in positions of this class.)
- Instructs and supervises athletes at practices and games.
- Corresponds with all parents, officials, and scorekeepers and completes all paperwork as necessary.
- Serves as a positive role model for the players, parents, officials, and fellow coaches by following all rules and demonstrating good sportsmanship.
- Supervises the players before, during, and immediately after practices and games.
- Provides a safe and enjoyable environment for all players, giving each child an equal opportunity to participate.
- May keep score for the games before and/or team games.
- Performs related duties similar to the above in scope and function as required.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
- Recreation, preferably with sports.
Ability to:
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including diverse internal and external customers.
- Work with diverse populations and maintain an inclusive environment.
- Supervise youth.
- Evaluate situations, make decisions, and give oral instructions.
- Follow safe work practices and observe safety rules.
- Show initiative, be responsible, caring, concerned, and prideful in the daily endeavors with people and job responsibilities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or G.E.D.;
and
Experience with recreation, preferably with sports.
or
An equivalent combination of education and experience.
POSSESSION AND MAINTENANCE OF:
- A valid California class C driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
- CPR/First Aid Certification
