What are the responsibilities and job description for the Recreation Assistant (Seasonal / Temporary) position at City of San Luis?
Under close supervision, the incumbent will provide assistance to Recreation Coordinators with special events, sports leagues, tournaments, and recreation programs. Duties will vary depending on the Division of Parks & Recreation (P&R) the incumbent is assigned to. Programs and special events occur throughout the year and work schedule may vary depending on program need including evenings, weekends and holidays.
As a Recreation Assistant you will:
- Provide front line customer service on the phone or walk-ins in a fast, friendly and professional manner.
- Participate in daily operations of assigned facility which may include organizing, cleaning and sanitizing work area and public areas; monitoring and maintaining inventory of supplies.
- Responds to requests for information, complaints, and/or other related issues from the general public.
- Prepares a variety of paperwork, rosters, reports, and simple statistics related to daily activities.
- Receives and processes recreation program registrations, memberships, and facility reservations, which involves routine bookkeeping activities such as processing refunds, printing membership cards, and day passes, processing class transfers, and other related functions.
- Assist with pre-event and post-event activities which may include event setup, painting and decorating, purchasing supplies, design and creation of ideas and themes, cleanup and reorganization, props and decoration storage, and monitor and maintain inventory of supplies.
- Participate in daily operations of assigned facility which may include distributing and collecting gaming equipment within applicable facilities, setting up facilities for classes.
- Assist with event day operations which may include cash handling, beverage and giveaway distribution and leading community activities.
- Performs a variety of clerical activities in support of office operations, which may include inputting information into databases, preparing promotional flyers and related items, answering phones, filing, maintaining calendar of events, websites, etc.
- Monitors patrons utilizing recreation facilities. Identifies and resolves potentially hazardous situations. Exercises diligence in maintaining safety for all members and guests.
- Performs emergency service by rescue, respond and first aid in all situations through the facility as necessary.
- Assist with preparation of sports fields including painting field lines, watering and grooming infields, chalking foul lines.
- Assists with instruction of recreation programs, classes, activities, and events
- May assist with cleaning facilities if need.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Will possess knowledge of:
- Local park rules and regulations
- Basic principles and techniques of recreational activities.
- Basic safety procedures related to a recreation facility.
- Basic first aid
- Effective communication skills and customer service practices.
- Software applications such as MS Office Suite of Programs including Excel Spreadsheets.
Will have the ability to:
- Understand and follow written departmental policies and procedures.
- Understand and interpret recreation policies and procedures when working with citizens or event participants.
- Adapt to different participant needs and weather conditions
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with city officials, participants, interested groups and the general public.
- Work independently or collaboratively

- Work with software applications such as MS Office Suite of Programs including Excel Spreadsheets
- Perform general calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and percentages.
- Work varying schedule to include evenings, weekends and holidays as special events require.
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
Licenses and Certifications:
- First Aid/CPR Certification or must be able to obtain it within 30 days of hire.
- Fingerprint Clearance Card – Level 1 or able to obtain prior first-day employment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Residency in the United States and within 25 miles of the City of San Luis.
DESIRED/PREFERRED:
- Bilingual in Spanish.
- San Luis residency.
- Customer service experience.

Work Environment

Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely.
