The City of San Marcos is seeking a non-paid GIS Intern to learn the practical and technical knowledge needed to successfully perform data maintenance, data collection, and cartography required to support current city projects. Hands-on experience will be gained in many technical aspects of GIS, including editing in ArcGIS Pro, data standards, and best practices.

A successful candidate will be able to work with many data types from various sources and collaborate with personnel from various areas of expertise. The selected candidate will play an important role in learning the development, creation and maintenance of GIS data that supports all City's Departments and Enterprise Applications.
Educational experience to be gained: The GIS Intern will gain technical experience working in an enterprise geodatabase environment supporting a local government agency. The selected candidate will develop skills working with data in ArcGIS Pro. The City is willing to work with the student for educational credit if requested and applicable to current course of study.
Internship length: The expected length of the GIS internship is one semester. The duration may be extended per department approval and continued benefit to the intern and the organization.
Hours: The expected commitment of this internship is 10-20 hours per week. The Development Services Department is flexible with hours depending on current school schedule.
Internship requirements: Incoming intern should have a general understanding of GIS concepts including geodatabases, coordinate systems, and GIS data types. To be eligible for this non-paid internship opportunity, intern should either be currently enrolled or recently completed (within 12 months) relevant course study through a college, professional or vocational program or have recent relevant experience.
