FT Paratransit Driver

The City of San Pablo is actively recruiting for a team-oriented, well-experienced, full-time driver for the paratransit program for the Community Services Department. Under the supervision of the Community Services Coordinator, the Paratransit Driver is responsible for:

• Driving up to a 12 -passenger van delivering passengers to designated locations for door-to door service in a safe and efficient manner. 
• Providing courteous and professional assistance to passengers, ensuring their safety, comfort, and accessibility needs are met. 
• Loading and unloading wheelchairs using both manual and electric lifts, including pushing wheelchairs up and down ramps. 
• Preparing daily reports including driver manifests, fare collections, vehicle inspections, and other required documents.
• Conducting and documenting daily vehicle inspections, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and promptly reporting any maintenance needs
• Adapting driving schedule based on last-minute changes to routes while ensuring timely and efficient service.
• Responsibilities may include some evening, weekend, and holiday assignments.

This position drives one of three vehicles on a daily basis, transporting seniors and disabled adults to locations in and around the San Pablo area. Our vehicles seat three – twelve (3 – 12) passengers and have manual and electronic ramps. Hours of work are Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.

Knowledge of: 

• California Motor Vehicle Code; geography and street systems of the City of San Pablo and surrounding areas. 
• Basic mechanical features of a vehicle. 
• Basic recordkeeping practices.
• Safe and efficient work practices as they related to the operation of a van with a lift.
• Occupational hazards and safety precautions required in a public transit operation. 
• Strong customer service skills, including patience, empathy, and effective communication with seniors and individuals with disabilities.
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

An ideal candidate will have:

• At least one year of experience driving a transportation vehicle with a capacity of 10 or more passengers.
• Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
• Experience providing excellent customer service, particularly in assisting persons with disabilities or adults over the age of 50, is preferred.

Requiredlicenseandcertificate:

• Possessionof a valid California Class B driver’s license with a School Bus Driver Endorsement and maintenance of a satisfactory driving record. 
• Ability to obtain First aid and CPR certification within six (6) months of hire.
