The City's Summer Camp Leaders provide leadership, program guidance and functional supervision to participants of Camp Central, Sports Camps, Nature Camps or Therapeutic Recreation programs. These positions may be assigned to work at Central Park, Dougherty Station Community Center, Iron Horse Community Gym, or other locations throughout San Ramon.
Supervision Received and Exercised
Receives direct or general supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises no direct supervision over staff. May exercise technical and functional direction and provide training to other staff.
Class Characteristics
These are the entry-level classes in the Recreation Leader Series within Parks and Community Services Department. Positions within this class typically have basic work-related experience. Positions at the I level usually perform duties required of the positions at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Recreation Leader II is distinguished from the class of Recreation Leader I by responsibility for on-site coordination of a specific program area.
Positions in this series are flexibly staffed and are filled on a seasonal program-specific basis. Positions at the II level can be filled by advancement from the I level requiring 250 hours of additional experience and after gaining the knowledge, skill, and experience which meet the qualifications for and after demonstrating the ability to perform the work of the higher-level class.

What Does a Summer Camp Recreation Leader Do?

Recreation Leader I:
- Attends mandatory meetings and trainings.
- Responds to questions by the public concerning program and department activities.
- Supervises and engages with program participants.
- Facilitates and implements recreation activities according to a prepared curriculum.
- Maintains a safe program environment and facility.
- Administers first aid as required; handles emergency or out-of-the ordinary situations by notify the proper authority or responder.
- Understands and implements departmental policies and procedures
- Keeps records and prepares reports.
- Provides program feedback to the supervisory or management staff.
- Other duties as assigned to provide excellent customer service.
- All duties assigned to the Recreation Leader I.
- Open, close and secure program site.
- Plan and organize program elements.
- Work in a lead position over Recreation Leader I and volunteers.
- Assist supervisory staff with training Recreation Leader series.
- Maintain the ability to have direct contact with supervisory staff during all shifts.
- Provide recommendations and research for age appropriate curriculum development and changes.
- Create and distribute marketing materials; and provide input to the supervisory staff.
- Purchase supplies or pay for field trips with approval from supervisory staff.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Common sports, games and recreation activities appropriate for all ages.
- Youth supervision and leadership techniques.
- Concepts of program risk management and safe work practices.
- Supervise and lead youth of various ages.
- Communicate effectively and possess excellent interpersonal skills while interacting with program participants, co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
- Handle and prioritize multiple tasks.
- Provide reliable and dependable assistance to the assigned program areas.
- Provide creativity and enthusiasm to the assigned program areas.
- Work outdoors in a variety of weather and temperature conditions.
- At the II Level, work independently with minimal direction from the Recreation Coordinator or Supervisor.
Who Can Apply?
Recreation Leader I:
- Must be a minimum of 16 years old by May 22, 2025
- Experience working with children in a sport setting, day camp, child care program, youth program or summer camp is desired
- Documentation of a negative skin test for TB that is dated within the past 2 years
- Appropriate clearance from Livescan fingerprinting and in-person First Aid/CPR for Adult and Child certification due by the first day of employment
- Must be a minimum of 17 years old on May 22, 2025
- At least 250 hours of experience working with children in a sport setting, day camp, child care program, youth program or summer camp
- An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above

- California class C driver's license
- First Aid Certification
- Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification
