- Performing a variety of tasks in maintaining and repairing streets and sidewalks.
- Constructs and sets forms, finishes concrete, and repairs both new and existing concrete surfaces.
- Performs routine maintenance and repair work to city streets, including pothole patches and asphalt/concrete repairs.
- Assist with repairing utility cuts, raising valves and manhole covers in preparation for resurfacing, constructing curb and gutter and sidewalks, cleaning catch basins and other related tasks.
- Assists with the maintenance, repair and installation of street signs and pavement markings.
- Assists with installing and maintaining holiday decorations, banners, etc.
- Performs preventive maintenance and makes minor repairs to equipment; inspects equipment.
- Operates dump trucks, asphalt roller, etc. in the performance of tasks for the maintenance and repair of streets.
- Uses a variety of hand tools and equipment in performance of tasks, such as concrete saw, chainsaw, weed-eater, edger, jackhammer, plate tamp, etc.
- Adheres to safety policies and procedures.
- Assists with snow removal and ice control.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Qualifications
Some knowledge of traffic services and the ability to set up traffic control to ensure safety of work zone, special event, and emergency situations, streets drainage, landscape areas and related construction, maintenance and repair procedures; some knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public. Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and minimal experience in general construction, maintenance and/or grounds keeping work. Must meet and maintain all certification, license and training requirements for the division which assigned, to include Confined Space, North Carolina DOT Flagger, Work Zone and Traffic Control, and Trenching and Shoring certifications within six months of employment.
Special Requirements
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license upon hire, with the ability to obtain a North Carolina Class “B” commercial driver’s license within a specific time limit set by the City of Sanford according to FMCSA requirements. Prefer applicants who already possess CDL Class B or Class A. Successful candidates with Class B or Class A will be compensated at a higher salary.
