Description of Work/Duties:

  • Assigns, supervises and participates in the work of a crew involved in traffic services and control, street, sidewalk, curb and gutter construction, maintenance, and repair.
  • Assists with the hiring process; coaches, counsels, and conducts performance appraisals, and recommends disciplinary action when required.
  • Supervises the operation of all equipment for the division which assigned, such as dump trucks, backhoe, bucket truck, front-end loader, motor grader, street sweeper, large lawn mowers, jack hammers, air compressors, chainsaws, weed eaters, and other related tools and equipment.
  • Ensures minor repairs and maintenance on assigned equipment; schedules equipment maintenance or repairs as required; ensures equipment is cleaned and washed on a periodic basis.
  • Supervises assigned inmates in a variety of activities.
  • Discusses job requirements with and receives detailed instructions from Transportation Administrator; makes and adjusts work.
  • Ensures crew has sufficient materials and equipment to complete project.
  • Prepares reports; maintains records and files; completes timesheets; schedules leave requests; reviews and submits payroll for processing.
  • Oversees proper traffic control is set up to ensure safety during work zone, special event, and emergency situations.
  • Ensures employees are trained in the safe and proper use of equipment; ensures crews are in conformance with department policies, and safety rules and regulations.
  • Coordinates work with other departments as needed.
  • Receives and responds to citizen inquiries and complaints.

Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of the methods and the various equipment for which assigned, to include cleaning and maintenance of streets, trimming of trees, etc.; thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions related to the work; general knowledge of OSHA regulations; general knowledge in the use of standard office equipment and associated software; thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; thorough knowledge of City and department policies and procedures; thorough knowledge in reading, interpreting, and understanding blue prints, engineering drawings, equipment manuals, and other related documents; thorough knowledge in preparing reports, related documents, and maintaining records and files; ability to plan and supervise the work of crew members; ability to handle personnel problems; ability to make mathematic computations; ability to compute ratios, rates and percentages; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public. Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in traffic services and control, street maintenance and repair, and moderate supervisory experience. Possession of a valid NC driver’s license upon hire, with the ability to obtain an appropriate NC commercial driver’s license within six months of employment.
