Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Education: Completion of 10th grade.
Minimum Age: 16years
Certification: Prior to start of program employee must possess a valid:
- CPR Certificate
- First Aid Certificate issued by the American Red Cross or similar agency.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Must remain in the pool area at all times.
- Must be able to remain alert with no lapses of consciousness in a warm environment with air temperatures of 80 degrees or higher.
- Perform all physical aspects of the position, including walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds at a time in a warm pool environment.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Essential job functions may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Provide swimming instruction to students of various ages and ability levels.
- Maintain constant supervision of students, watch for swimmers needing assistance, and aid swimmers when necessary to ensure a positive learning environment.
- Attend in-service training sessions and other meetings as required.
- Assist in the inspection of the facility, equipment and supplies.
- Assist in the opening and closing of the facility.
- Be alert for hazardous situations when performing duties your area and report violations to the Pool Manager.
- Ensure that all pool patrons obey the facility rules.
- Ensure that all activities are conducted in a safe and healthful manner and that any play and work areas are clean and free of all safety hazards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Basic child guidance principles and practices.
- Leadership techniques.
- General techniques of the various swim strokes.
- Effective supervision of youth activities and programs.
- Oral and written communications skills.
- Patience and the ability to communicate with all ages and levels of swimmers and their guardians.
- Demonstrated ability to swim in shallow and deep water, and tread water.
- Plan and carryout assigned activities.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Be active, lift and/or carry equipment and supplies.
- Work in a leadership role with children and adults.
- Work harmoniously with fellow employees and the public.
- Pass pre-employment physical skills evaluation as stipulated by the department.
