What are the responsibilities and job description for the Street Lighting Maintenance Worker position at City of Santa Ana?

- In a safe manner, performs skilled electrical work in the maintenance and repair of the street lighting system, including high pressure sodium, LED and incandescent systems, both low and high voltage.
- Operates specialized high lift equipment, working in a bucket in excess of twenty-five feet off the ground in order to reach street lighting equipment on poles to perform repairs, replacements and cleaning.
- Safely repairs and replaces underground cables, makes splices, replaces lamps, paints standards, and repairs and replaces broken poles; cleans refractors, lenses and street lamps using various cleaning materials.
- Investigates, troubleshoots, checks circuits, locates grounds and open circuits, and makes field and emergency repairs.
- Tests circuits, tubes, transformers, resistors, capacitors, switches and other equipment in the shop.
- Loads and unloads equipment and tools from the truck; cleans work sites at completion of jobs as needed.
- Sets up barricades and safety cones to cordon off work areas and perform related tasks in compliance with safety rules and regulations.
- Uses electrical testing and monitoring equipment; ladders, hand tools and power tools (e.g., hammers, screwdrivers, drills, wrenches, pliers, picks and shovels); safety devices or equipment (e.g., cones, barricades); and personal protective equipment (e.g., hard hat, shoes, glasses, gloves, and vests).
- Communicates and/or consults with contractors regarding the maintenance and repair of the street lighting system.
- Maintains records and uses a computer to enter and complete information for time records, other basic records, and basic reports; requests supplies as needed.
- May supervise a small crew of City employees/contractors.
- Performs other functions as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent plus two years of experience involving the maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic street lighting systems and operating specialized high lift equipment while working in excess of twenty-five feet off the ground; or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities listed below.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of: the principles of electrical circuits, street light equipment and materials used in municipal street lighting systems; practices, methods, electrical and electronic test equipment, tools, materials and equipment used in electrical and electronic repair and maintenance work; repair and maintenance procedures applicable to street light maintenance; how to use safety equipment and protective gear; applicable safety and code standards and regulations specific to street light maintenance, including CalOSHA standards, the National Electrical Code, and the State of California Standard Plans and Specifications; how to safely operate specialized high lift equipment; knowledge of electrical and high lift equipment safety procedures; occupational hazards and safety precautions essential in the maintenance and repair of high voltage electrical equipment; applicable emergency operations; applicable City and department policies, procedures, rules, regulations and ordinances; traffic control, including placement of cones and warning signs per the Work Area Traffic Control Handbook (WATCH) published by Building News, Inc., or recognized industry standards; computers to complete time records, and generate basic reports and correspondence.
Skill in: the safe operation of high lift equipment; the safe use of electrical and electronic test equipment, and other tools and equipment used in the day-to-day maintenance and repair of street lighting systems.
Ability to: work alone in high and hazardous locations in a safe manner; read and work from electrical drawings and blueprints; read and understand detailed written and oral instructions; effectively communicate, both orally and in writing, with supervisors, coworkers, contractors and the public; use a computer to enter and complete information.
SPECIAL MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Possession and retention of a valid California Class C driver's license.
Must be willing to work at great heights using a bucket on a lift truck with potential exposure to physical harm; work outside, under varying climatic conditions; work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays, as needed; must be willing and able to respond to after-hours emergency calls.
SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Due to the nature of the work, incumbents must have the ability to: tolerate heights while performing work; use both hands, arms and legs; stand and walk for extended or continuous periods of time; bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with one’s body, arms, and/or legs; lift, carry, and manipulate objects above head-height, weighing up to 30 pounds without assistance; climb ladders; and operate applicable hand tools, power tools, and equipment.
