THE POSITION
The City of Santa Barbara Public Works Department is seeking a Wastewater Treatment Plant Technician. Are you mechanically skilled? Do you have experience in maintaining engines or pumps, or working on plumbing? Do you have a passion for keeping essential systems running smoothly? You could be who we are looking for to join our dedicated team at the El Estero Water Resource Center. Under general supervision of the Treatment Plant Technician Supervisor and Senior Treatment Plant Technician, the Treatment Plant Technician maintains, repairs, and installs wastewater treatment plant equipment, machinery, and related facilities, maintains a variety of records; participates in special projects; and performs a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility. On the job training to work on some of the specialized mechanical equipment and devices utilized at El Estero WRC will be provided to the incumbent. Note: Incumbents may be required to be on call after hours and respond to emergency problems at any hour as needed. Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays; incumbents may be required to participate in an alternate work scheduled based on the needs of the division.
BENEFITS
Knowledge of:
- Maintenance and repair of pumps, generators, compressors, fillers, valves and chemical feeders.
- Mechanical safety practices.
- A basic knowledge of wastewater treatment plant process is highly desirable.
Skill In:
- Operating a variety of hand, power and specialized electrical, oxygen and acetylene apparatus for cutting and welding, plumbing and mechanical tools and equipment.
- The use of confined space entry equipment is desirable.
Ability to:
- Perform routine repairs and maintenance of specialized mechanical equipment.
- Learn to diagnose mechanical problems and recognize operational and maintenance. problems.
- Read maintenance records, blueprints, manuals, and schematic drawings.
- Participate in diagnosing, troubleshooting, updating and repairing malfunctioning equipment.
- Maintain an accurate maintenance record.
- Communicate concisely both orally and in writing.
- Follow verbal and written instructions.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of water and wastewater process equipment.
Proficiency with tools, equipment, and machinery used in industrial or plant maintenance.
Education and/or Training:
Graduation from the twelfth grade or a GED, supplemented by additional courses or training in mechanics or a related field.
License, Certificate and/or Other Requirements:
Possession of a valid California Driver’s License at the time of appointment.
Possession of, or the ability to obtain a Mechanical Technologist Grade 1 certification issued by the California Water Environmental Association (CWEA) within one year of appointment.
