THE POSITION
Under supervision, lead and/or participate in maintenance and repairs at the Waterfront Department. Operate gas and electric powered equipment (pick-up trucks, street sweeper, lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, etc.), utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed, maintains hazardous waste collection storage sites, inventories and maintain custodial supplies, works over water or from boats, and perform a variety of building and equipment maintenance, repairs and upgrades as needed. Keep accurate records. Provide exemplary customer service to all individuals by demonstrating a willingness to be attentive, understanding, responsive, fair, courteous and respectful and actively participate in maintaining a positive customer service environment. Waterfront Maintenance Worker I/II positions are flexibly staffed classifications. The selected candidate will be placed in either the I or II level, dependent on relevant qualifications, as applications will be screened to place incumbent at either the I or II level based on education and related work experience. See job descriptions for more information on job duties. Work Schedule: This position works a 9/80 flex schedule, Monday - Friday, with every other Friday off. On-call weekend duty is on a Rotating On-Call duty, and emergency coverage as required.
Knowledge of: Occupational hazards and standard safety practices; operational characteristics of mechanical equipment and tools used in the area of work assigned. Installation, maintenance, and repair procedures for structures and utilities, including construction, electrical/electronic repair, plumbing, welding, HVAC, roofing, painting, concrete and asphalt work, and grounds and custodial work. Occupational hazards and safe work practices. General construction principles, methods and techniques. Basic record-keeping. Scuba Diving certification and experience a plus.
Ability to: Perform a variety of custodial, clerical, maintenance, construction and repair work as assigned. Operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner. Perform manual labor, including a variety of manual tasks, for extended periods of time, occasionally in inclement weather. Learn uses and purposes of general construction, maintenance and repair of tools and equipment. Understand and follow written and oral instructions. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Work independently in the absence of supervision. Work, walk, and operate vessels over water. Swim is highly desirable. Learn to operate a personal computer and maintenance software programs.
Experience: Level I: One year of experience in either custodial, grounds keeping or maintenance is highly desirable; Level II: Two years performing general maintenance work is highly desirable.
License Requirements: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver's license.
Physical Standards: Position requires frequent lifting/carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds and less frequently up to 50 pounds, stooping, kneeling, reaching and handling, walking, standing, climbing, or sitting; some positions may require the ability to lift objects weighing up to 100 pounds with frequent lifting up to 50 pounds and the ability to climb.
Job Conditions: Most duties in this class are performed under periodically disagreeable working conditions outside, sometimes in adverse weather, working over the ocean, exposed to water, mud, sand, dirt, grease; may be exposed to disagreeable conditions including paint fumes, caustic chemicals, equipment noise and vibration, inclement weather and dampness.
