The Public Library division is currently recruiting for a Children’s Librarian, Teen Services Librarian, and Adult Services Librarian.
Under the general direction of the Senior Librarian, the Librarian is responsible for high-level reference and subject matter assistance to patrons of the library. This position is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities of a designated service area and leading library staff and volunteers. Library staff, including Librarians, may rotate program areas and / or library locations from time to time based on organizational need. This position requires the ability to work evenings and weekends.
Duties and Responsibilities :
- Provides general reference assistance, reader’s advisory, and user instruction to patrons; assists patrons with reference questions and selection of materials, periodicals and other print and non-print materials verbally and in writing; informs patrons of library procedures, practices, services, and materials; instructs patrons in use of print and online resources.
- Assists patrons at service desks; checks materials in and out; registers patrons and issues library cards; creates and maintains patron records; processes overdue library materials; receives and prepares receipts for money received; answers questions and provides information to patrons; assists patron access to public computers; observes patron confidentiality of library records.
- Participates in collection development; participates in selection of materials for assigned collections; analyzes, determines needs, selects, and deselects library collections in assigned specific subject area.
- Develops or assists in the development of programs for a variety of age groups that require verbal instructions, a presentation, or a demonstration; plans, schedules, and conducts programming with established goals and outcomes; assists in developing marketing strategies and creating content to promote the library and library collections, including capturing photographs and statistical data.
- Creates, plans, researches, develops, and executes library displays.
- Provides technical support to employees and patrons in the operations of computer equipment; troubleshoots and resolves basic workstation hardware and software problems; provides user training; operates audiovisual equipment.
- Maintains current knowledge of trends and innovations in the field of library science and information technology; reviews professional literature; attends and participates in meetings, conferences and workshops of professional peers and associations; participates in professional development activities.
- Serves as the Person in Charge (PIC) of the library staff and building in absence of the Library Administrator; resolves patron conflicts; guides and supports staff; rectifies maintenance issues; evaluates and provides feedback on staff performance.
- Evaluates community needs and patron requests to ensure the public reference services meet needs and interests; recommends changes and improvements to service delivery as needed; ensures service desk binders are current.
- Establishes positive working relationships with City employees, outside vendors, community members, and patrons; represents the library and City at various meetings and events.
- Other duties as assigned.

As a City of Santa Clarita public employee, you may be called upon to work as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW) in the event of an emergency (in accordance with Government Code §§ 3100-3109). Before entering upon the duties of employment, all public employees, except those excluded by law, take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation set forth in the California Constitution, declaring them to be Disaster Service Workers in time of need.
Compensation includes enrollment in California Public Employees’ Retirement System as a replacement for Social Security plus a competitive benefits package. All appointments are made at step 1 of the salary range unless otherwise authorized by the City Manager.
