What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Worker position at City of Santee?
Under direct or general supervision, performs a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled routine manual work in the construction, modification, maintenance, and repair of City infrastructure, including but not limited to streets, signs, storm drains, operation of a variety of manual and power tools, and light to heavy power driven equipment; and performs related work as required. This is an entry-level classification that may be assigned to various areas of the Public Services Division and is distinguished from the Equipment Operator classification by the performance of more routine duties and direct supervision/direction received. Incumbents are expected to refer matters which do not fit a clear pattern to a supervisor for instruction.

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
- Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools and equipment related to work assignments as instructed;
- Lift and move object and materials, such as dirt, debris, and concrete, by wheelbarrow or other means;
- Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner, providing information within the area of assignment, and resolving complaints in an efficient and effective manner.
- Assist in investigating complaints and resolving unanticipated problems;
- Perform repairs and adjustments on tools and equipment and ensure proper lubrication, maintenance and safe operation;
- Observe and document all unsatisfactory and unsafe situations;
- Report needed repairs and maintenance of facilities and infrastructure;
- Prepare and maintain accurate logs and records of hours worked, work performed, equipment and materials used and prepare reports from such;
- Observe scheduled hours;
- Respond to after-hours emergencies, if required;
- Observe safe work methods and utilize safety equipment as directed;
- Assist in the construction, maintenance and repair activities of City roadways and public spaces to ensure safe and efficient access for the public, including sidewalks, curbs, gutters, roadway base and sub-base, asphalt pavement, crack seal application, concrete repair, traffic and street sign installation and repair, and pavement markings;
- Operate and maintain specialized vehicles and a variety of light and medium equipment related to the construction, maintenance and repair of public spaces in a safe and efficient manner;
- Assist with asphalt patching operations including traffic control and concrete work;
- Assist with the maintenance of City flood control channels;
- Assist with the installation and maintenance of traffic signs, legends, striping and guardrails;
- Operate all crack sealing equipment in various field conditions;
- Inspect City premises for graffiti vandalism and uses appropriate chemicals and/or high-pressure equipment to remove graffiti;
- Assist in the inspection, maintenance and repair of box culverts under roads and bridges;
- Assist in the inspection, maintenance and repair of all City drop inlets, storm drains, storm water pipes, brow ditches, outlets, creeks and channels; and
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Any combination of education and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this classification. An example would be: Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent; AND
Experience: One (1) year of recent entry-level experience performing general public works construction and repair work.

License:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Class C California driver's license at time of appointment. A Class B California commercial driver's license must be obtained within one (1) year of date of hire as a condition of continued employment, and must be maintained during employment. A safe driving record is required and must be maintained during period of employment.
Employees with a Class B license are subject to mandatory drug and alcohol testing as required by the Department of Transportation (DOT). The applicant selected will be given a conditional offer of employment pending the outcome of a post-offer physical and drug screen. Additionally, applicants will be required to provide written authorization allowing the City to contact previous employers to determine if the applicant has tested positive for drugs or alcohol, or refused to submit for testing.
This position will be required to comply with the City's Stand-by/Call-Back policy, and requires the individual to be available on a rotating basis to carry the duty pager and work after hours on weekends and holidays once a Class B driver's license is obtained.
Background Investigation:
The applicant selected will be subject to a criminal history investigation through the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and employment reference checks, and will be required to submit verification of the legal right to work in the United States. A waiver for reference and background information must be completed.
City of Santee employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
